DylanReeve: Design problems are no excuse for misleading information unfortunately. It seems quite likely that many customers have made the same assumption that Richard (and others here) have - and many of those people may not even realise their assumption is incorrect for many months until they have the need to top up their data.

The more I think about it, the more I think that Snap has an obligation to provide the data add-ons at the price it had to be assumed they would cost - in the absence of any other information the only conclusion it was possible to draw was that add-ons were the quoted costs for the initial plans. Basically that is has to be assumed that every customer has signed up with that expectation.

There website looks quite amateurish, and two of the top button don't work. I too read their website as meaning what others here have said, and was considering these guys as my next ISP for home use as it looked like a good deal. Their website doesn't explain it at all, even in the support pages.

Unintentional or not.
Pretty poor imo.

Especially since SNAP tries to display itself as a big professional player.

Also, yea. Agree on poor site design.
Not that I can really talk having to use free hosting until we can move in the next couple of weeks :D

But yea. Lose the noobiness. Your an ISP. Not a Toyworld.

At the very least it should be explained better and those 'top up prices' displayed clearly on their website to new customers, if they are different from the top up prices on their plans. Otherwise people will presume that those are the actual top up prices.

Definitely - and I think they need to be displayed prominently. A small print footnote or link is not enough. If they are structuring their pricing like that they need to be very clear about the ongoing pricing for that model.

i just recently signed up with snap.
i was told very clearly on the phone before i signed up and during the sign up process that the monthly data block is a different thing to the top up data.

i didnt find it confusing at all.

I see that Snap now include the relevant information:

"Our top up prices for purchasing additional data are available here."

Great, so if you resort to using a telephone to join they told you that. I didnt call, I signed up online as I would expect a majority of people would do. Only time to call an ISP is when it is broken.

Sort of - http://www.snap.net.nz/fancybox/additional_data/ - not found - it does have a overlay when you click it with JS enabled, but perhaps that is just that they quickly added that thisevening.

Good thing I got the screenshots before starting this thread then.

I wish their broadband purchasing additional data was much like it is on their prepaid plans, on their prepaid plans I was paying $65 for 20gb then I could just purchase additional data at the exact same rates. Loved it.

While I agree with everything which has been said in this thread, one still has to think about it, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I can't ever see snap offering a comparable service to slingshot for the same price, snap just won't drop themselves to those levels :)

I find it pretty sneeky that they see this post and update their website and yet they are completey silent and don't reply to the post.

When the often quoted price to buy it from southern cross is 5c/GB, then I dont think expecting to pay 70c/GB is expecting something that is too good to be true.

The pricing of the extra 100 gig block is so messed up at $120, that it is only $5 more to get a second snap naked dsl connection which comes with 5GB, and add the automatic 100 gigs to that - totalling $125. so I would end up paying $250 for 210 gigs with 2 ADSL connections so twice the upload speed which is the biggest obstacle to a decent internet experience IMO.

You need to consider the price SXC mentioned in that ComsDay presentation is only for the SXC cable and does not include:

- How data it gets from your home to your ISP and from your ISP to the SXC cables
- Peering/interconnection, eg: the cost of getting the data/traffic somewhere else after it arrives at the SXC off load in San Jose
- All other ISP costs

While that is true, when places like slingshot have 250GB data for $70 a month plan, it kinda makes you think a little as to exactly what it IS really costing the ISP's..
Sure, I realise that slingshot is probably hedging their bets that not everyone will use up all 250GB in a month, but still, when snap are charging $145 for only 100GB of data with it costing another $120 to get another 100GB something seems very very wrong with the charges.
