The simplistic way is to root and install oxygen custom rom, or go to xda forums read up and follow the instructions for huawei GB rom
Thanks for the quick reply, but (never having done this before) I need much more of a 'beginner's guide' before I dare to try it. But does this mean that there is no "2 degrees approved" way of upgrading?
You only need to root your phone if you want to backup applications. If you want to start fresh, just visit the U8800 development forum on the XDA site and choose what you want to install. You just need to drop the CWM onto the boot loader. Someone posted a fantastic step by step instruction on installing a custom rom. I been using MIUI now for ages and its top notch. Just make a jump.
As I said, if you are not going to back anything up then just skip the z4roort and backup, just go into bootloader and drop in the CWM, load into recovery, wipe data/factory reset, install the rom you want, wipe dalvik, reboot, done.
It is out now, but the general feeling is that it is a mixed bag. Some phones run it no problems and others get broken by it. 2 degrees would need to test it before pushing it to NZ users which could take a while.
Personally, I would just like them to release the kernel source as I am running oxygen now and it would be nice to have the official GB kernel tweaked instead of the older Froyo kernel.

So I guess it's OK. A sales guy in Auckland also said that software updates aren't a problem as long as you know how to do a factory reset "if things don't go as expected".
The count of the downloads is around 9000 now and there has been no reports of problems so... why not.
Being and iphone user myself, i did not like the 2.2 software... but the upgrade is a vast improvement...
The phone did not automatically restart after the upgrade, and it took a while and a few presses of the power button, but it eventyally booted fine and seems great. The power consumption sucked on the 2.2 software (2/3rds of a day from full charge to dead.. ) so time will tell if this makes a difference.
