Long time MIUI user - I recently (a week or so ago) upgraded to official GB.

I have just upgraded to the latest MIUI (using the updated kernal).

So far everything is working perfectly, this is probably the best rom i have used so far, and I've tried most of them (oxygen, CM7 MIUI).

I'm keen to go back to MIUI but so far it seems there are issues with the rom  that ret4rt has done.  I can wait.

Install is very very simple.  Just get an SD with at least 512MB free, download the zip file mentioned in a previous post here and follow the instructions that come with the zip.

No issues so far.  When you say phone is sleeping, you simply mean standby, like screen turned off?  I'm happy to test call it.

The OC'd kernel seems fine too.  No issues there.

I'm currently using this ROM - no issues at all for me, very happy with it.

Thanks. I think they must mean when in standby when they said sleep. Presumably for him the phone doesn't alert him to the call, so get passed onto voicemail. So wireless is good too, I think there was an early update with wireless issues.

What version?  The 2.1.6?

they called it "deep sleep". i tested mine in the last few days, no missing calls or low call volume.

but your mileage may vary. it appears the x5 has quite a few variations (i.e. 2 touchscreens, and both reporting some issues), and some ppl have problems while others are fine.

you don't need an external micro sd card to upgrade, copy the dload folder to the internal sd works just fine - I haven't tested external sd card though, some ppl say with fast boot the sd card is not recognized after reboot.

I see from the .pdf included in the .zip that all user data will be wiped. What is the best way to back this up so it can be restored after the upgrade?

sd card an internal memory data will be left untouched.  All apps and personal info like contacts and sms will be wiped.

I used an app to backup my sms.  my contacts are sycn'd with google.

I installed MIUI 2.1.6 last night.  I have only had one freeze which I think was from an install error when my apps where updating.  However, its clocked to 1.5ghz again and the wifi problems I had with the froyo MIUI seem to have gone.  Wifi was on all night and did not drop.  Amazing.

Overall, the feel of MIUI is great hence I went back to it but its still running a GB kernel so it still seems nice and snappy.  I recommend either GB or MIUI.

I have had my phone running at 1.5ghz now for over 4 months and it has not once been an issue.  Look into rooting and changing the CPU if you wanted to try the same.  Always at your own risk of course.

I upgraded to the official GB rom as of tuesday night. The first 48 hours went very smooth, improved performance and greatly improved battery life.
Today not so good, battery charge has been smashed, phone has frozen a few times and now I seem to be suffering the dreaded wifi problem.
The wifi says it is connected but the icon is grey not green and tellingly I get a 'no connection' error when I try to actually connect to something.
Some of my apps have seemly reset as well with historical data having disappeared.

For clarification, does app data really get lost in the upgrade process, or are backups just in case? Or, are apps/data moved to ab external sd more likely to be retained?

At present what is the verdict as the best option - the official upgrade or one of the mods?

hairy1: OK. Here goes.

The upgrade process I used was:

Grab the following files from XDA threads:

New Kernal: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1166560

New Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130524

You may need Google Apps from here (at least for Cyanogen you do): http://code.google.com/p/u8800-cm7/downloads/list

One of the ROMs from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1123

CyanogenMod: Has loads of tweaks but development is a bit slower than MIUI or Oxygen. It has gingerbread VOIP included which is why I use it.

MIUI: iphone themed gingerbread :-)

Oxygen: Very stripped down clean version of Gingerbread.

Note: None of the Gingerbread roms support native wifi tether so if you need infrastructure tether you will need to stick with FROYO for now.

Move as many of your application as you can/like to the SD card prior to upgrading.
  1. Obtain root access via Z4Root from the market if you already haven’t
  2. Backup if you like using Titanium Backup from the market.
  3. Copy the ROM Zip file and the kernel file to your SD card on the phone.
  4. Shutdown the phone.
  5. Connect the USB cable to your phone and computer.
  6. Hold down volume up and down buttons (both volume buttons down) and press the power button. The screen should go purple to show you are in bootloader mode.
  7. Your PC should detect and display a USB drive which has a folder called IMAGE
  8. On your PC navigate to the IMAGE folder and copy the file recovery.img from your phone to the PC (backup the file somewhere).
  9. Copy Recovery file you downloaded above over top of the existing recovery.img file on your phone.
  10. Disconnect the phone and remove the battery to leave bootloader mode.
  11. Connect back to the PC and hold down the “VOL UP” key and power key on the phone to enter recovery. You should at this point have a display on the phone with black background and orange writing and a bunch of options.
  12. Navigate to “Apply ZIP from SD card” using volume keys and the power key to select. The back key on the base of the phone will get you back up menus.
  13. Apply the new kernel ZIP.
  14. Apply the ROM zip using the same method.
  15. Apply the google apps zip using the same method (I am not sure if MIUI or Oxygen need google apps, check the thread)
  16. At the main recovery menu you will see an option to clear the cache. Do this.
  17. Also under advanced you have to clear the DALVIK cache.
  18. Reboot to system.
  19. Go through the google apps setup.
  20. With Cyanogen I got errors with force closes on MEDIA after first boot. To clear this error, go to SETTINGS -> APPLICATIONS -> DOWNLOAD MANAGER and select CLEAR DATA,

That should be it. Good luck.

Cheers, Matt.

Ive been running oxygenmod and this kernel etc for awhile and phone has become slow and reboots a bit so today thought i would reflash.

Backed up with titanium backup

Hold Vol +  - and power and then i seem to get a black screen with 'Firmware Update Step 1/2Unpacking'
and this is updating the firmware with some stock 2.2 software.

I have the kernel and rom on the root of the sd card but what am i missing to get these flashed?
Am I missing CWM?
