Lykho:
it sounds like 'strings' may actually only refer to contract terms, not, say, a series of tripwires put in place with the goal of decreasing performance.

No Strings I believe refers to no contract.

However we don't have a series of "tripwires" with the goal to decrease speed. We have a system designed to prioritize "Attended Traffic" Eg: YouTube, general Browsing, gaming etc at the cost of decreasing some types of traffic like p2p.

Residential connections don't have dedicated speed associated with them its a shared connection thus the decrease in speed during high demand times.

ALTRON: I applied for the unlimited plan on Wednesday and it was activated today (Friday)

It runs really well. I see no difference from unlimited and the old telecom 100gb plan I was on. Connects at around 20mb line.

Downloading from FTP server at top speed of 2.2MB/s sustained.
Pleased :)

wow.
with Telecom, I'm connected at 65Mbps, and I can never get better than 1.2MB/s download.

what's the upload like?

My line statistics
 Stream Type
Actual Data Rate
Up Stream
1005 (Kbps.)
Down Stream
21783 (Kbps.)
Operation Data
Upstream
Downstream
Noise Margin
14 dB
12 dB
Attenuation
6 dB
18 dB
So I get around 80KB/s upload speed.

If I switch from Orcon to the Unlimited+homeline bundle, will there be any downtime, and will Slingshot handle the Orcon disconnection?

FYI- speaking from experience- after any move you should always call your former ISP yourself and ensure the account is cancelled. Not doing so may result in extra charges, especially around their 30 day notice policy. If you move without telling them expect a bill for 30 days service added onto your final bill as well.

30 day's notice? That sounds like a recipe for down time to me.

Changing from another provider like Orcon can be painful if your on their red network (Unbundled Exchange) this is becuase if your moving to a area that doesn't have our exchanges installed you will need to be put on the Telecom network and porting your number to Telecom is very painful and difficult.

We're gonna be moving into a new apartment at the start of feb and were hoping to get the naked unlimited broadband.. is that deal also going to end on 20th jan or is it only for the $60 deal? The website isn't very clear about it.. And is the naked DSL contract free or is that just the $60 one?

Would it be possible to get an account set up before we move?

Cheers

@ mwilcox

Naked bb unlimited is a standard plan now so it comes with a 12 month contract with a connection fee,

It is possible to have it connected before you move in as long as there isnt a current connection on site however it is recommended that you get the connection done once you take over the key as access to the property may be needed etc.

If you want any more info feel free to PM me or give us a call on 0800 89 2000.

Cheers

Does that mean the price won't go up after the 20th?

I asked when I signed up with Slingshot whether they would handle the disconnection with the other provider. The answer was yes however it didn't happen. Currently getting billed by two providers while I sort it out myself.

What factors determine whether you get put on BUBA or EUBA?

Just signed up with Slingshot and I'm connected to a cabinet, checked via http://slingshot.co.nz/ubatype/default.aspx and says I'm on BUBA

Assumed new connections would've been EUBA

Out of curiosity, where did you get your account "code" from?

So it's the customer number at the top of the page?

I've tried all the identifiers that I could find (customer number, the ubaxxx number - with and without the 'uba' bit, the username) and they all give a "not a uba line" error.
