MafiaGeek: Hi i'm having very strange issues around speed.. If i try to connect to youtube speeds are fine. But i cannot connect to any online game or stream. Whats going on here?

Hey MafiaGeek,

Is this PC gaming? or on a console?

Does sound odd but if it is working for everything else it seems unlikely that it would be an issue with speed or our network,

My first seguestion would be to try another modem.

If you PM me some more details ill see what stands out.

Cheers,
Joe.

An update to my issue, it appears there was a fault on my line and a tech was sent out to look at it. Things seem to have improved since. Thanks Slingshot for the good customer service. Has restored my faith in choosing you.

cicada: I recently signed up with Slingshot on the Naked DSL unlimited plan.
Though at first I was ecstatic about the download speeds, it now seems as though  "traffic shaping" has drastically been applied to my account!

Let me clarify, I do not use bittorrent or P2P at all. I use Skype, a small bit of FTP and a lot of good ol' HTTP.
I work in professional video/audio with an overseas production company and this is the primary reason I opted to get an unlimited account. I download/upload video and audio files of massive amounts at a time and I was sick of having to pay $30 premiums on my old ISP for an extra 10GB here and there when I needed it.

At first, Slingshot seemed like a good choice, as I was getting up to 1.2 MB/sec download speeds over HTTP. Now it seems that's been consistently halved for the last week and a half. I can now only get about 450 KB/sec from the same site I was previously getting 1.2 MB/sec. I asked my brother in the U.S. to try it out, using the same site and he could download at over 2mb/sec so I'm assuming the site is fine. The only thing I can think of is that my traffic is now being "shaped"? Actually, everything is slower now. Skype, youtube, ftp, and it very much feels like to me that someone has hit a switch somewhere, saying "limit this account for a while, he's downloading too much!"

I mean, I understand that unlimited has to have some traffic shaping on it but I guess I thought it would be primary geared towards bittorrent/P2P or other strange ports. I am surprised to see HTTP port 80 being so drastically shaped (if that is indeed what's happening).

I also wonder, when the "shaping" will reset (each billing cycle?) and at what point (how many GB) does the shaping kick into effect? I wonder this because skype has become slightly unusable since the speeds were reduced (it goes and comes quality wise but was a lot better when I first signed up).

I realize I may be making some assumptions here which is why I'm just kind of looking for some answers (as I've had no luck over the phone). Is my HTTP traffic being shaped or not? If it isn't, then why has it so consistently jumped down to half of it's previously ability? And if this is in fact the way things are, I'd honestly rather just go with a 250GB plan so I can at least know where I stand each month instead of wondering when I might pass that invisible line that gets my HTTP download speeds cut in half.

Any official answers/hints would be helpful in this situation as I'm quickly changing my opinion on whether I want to be a slingshot customer.

After a week or so or back to normal speeds after my last reported issue, my slow speeds seem to have returned again.

Line Speed: 18583/1053
Speedtest result (13:24 3/3/2012): 2160/850 (https://www.speedtest.net/result/1809803987.png)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
kpd

Is my speed capped?

ok, have previously had help from Joe on here who was helpful ,thanks Joe, however still cannot understand my drop in speeds. Was getting 16-18mbps download before being switched onto better network, now no matter what time of day, what website i use to test speed , max is 10.74ish, the needle just does not want to move any higher, Joe has done tests on line, looks fine, have tried different modem, filters in , other items unplugged, you name it...;still wont get past that speed, is it the max speed avaialble to me?, is it a capped speed?, 'profile' issue(seen that mentioned somewhere!)....i do realise the speed is still a decent speed but just can't understand the drop.

thanks Ian

Hi Ian,

I think the issue is likely to be the cable itself (Or a connection somewhere) The problem is that i cannot log a fault to Chorus for low line rate when they are 10mbps, It would also be near imposable for the tech to find where the issue is as it might just be a slightly dry joint or minor blemish in the copper.

I would say that this is the best speed you will get, It is possible that disconnecting and reconnecting will fix things as you would get a different port, trace etc but its no 100% and there would be a bit of downtime.
Another thing to consider with the above option is port waiters, Wouldn’t wont to disconnect to find that reconnection wasn’t possible!

We can always try logging it to chorus to see what they say if you wanted but there is a high chance they will say NFF (No Fault Found) and if they do this they will charge you a hefty fee.

Cheers,
Joe.

I signed up with slingshot on 22/02 for the homeline and broadband unlimited bundle and hoped the switch can be done by the end of Feb, but now I'm still waiting!! No homeline or internet since 29/02. Got an automated email on 23/02 saying "Your Slingshot direct dial tolls has been delayed". I called helpdesk on 24/02, got the answer some data was not submitted correctly and they will re-subscribe again and everything would be fine... but phone still not connected by now. Yesterday helpdesk said they would put a request to put me onto wholesale network first with $10/month extra charge before transferring me to the Better Network afterwards! (Ref NO. 4058842)

The experience is really a nightmare, customer service keep saying they have requested the connection and it's up to the "provisional team" to do the job??

How much longer do I have to wait for the connection?? Please HELP

Hi hanx,

It sounds like the original connection was what we call a "Sluba" connection, This is part of our better network but I have heard of this issue happening before,

If you can PM me your account details ill have a look for you,

Thanks,
Joe.

So I'm apparently scheduled for an install today, although I haven't received any further texts yet, and my connection hasn't come up yet.

Am I optimistic to think that in the next hour (4pm-5pm) it's going to come on?
(I assume Chorus don't install any later than 5pm...?)

Hi,

The connection techs will be working until 7pm today,

I have checked your account and there has been nothing from them to suggest otherwise so i am still expecting a connection today,

Thanks,
Joe.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised, but yeah - no internet tonight.

Maybe tomorrow huh.

Hi,

Seems that the tech did go out yesterday and connect you up but has not yet signed the job off so the steps that follow that have not been done,

I have requested these to be completed without the sign off so that we dont have to wait for the tech any longer.

Thanks,
Joe.
