Hi sbiddle,

I should've noted before as it may be good for comparison, this Orcon connection is on the secondary connection into the premises. We have a TelstraClear connection on the primary line, syncing at 19mbit/1.1mbit on Telecom Wholesale, no issues there. The sync rate on that connection had a massive boost at the same time as my Orcon connection did. There are no other devices on my line as I'm running nDSL (Orcon Genius).

I've replied to Orcon asking if they can verify that Chorus have completed work on the cabinet for my address (http://bcc.telecomwholesale.co.nz) which is the WKU/M cabinet - listed completion date on the website is December 2011 and this matches up with the sync rate changes earlier this month. I guess it's a waiting game from here.

Thanks for your replies so far.

cheers,

skippy

When you say no other devices do you mean no other jackpoints, ie the inbound line terminates at the modem? Multiple jackpoints will cause problems even if you don't have phones connected, plug in filters only exist to allow voice and xDSL to coexist, they can't remove reflections caused by multiple jackpoints. For this reason even with Naked DSL a master filter is essential if you have multiple jackpoints.

Hi sbiddle,

I mean there is only 1 jackpoint in the house wired for the secondary line, there are several jackpoints for the primary line (3) with 2 being in use for that line (1 for homephone, 1 for the TelstraClear connection), hope this clarifies. Also to note (maybe its irrelevant) is that Orcon specifically say to not use a filter to connect to the jackpoint, it's rj11 (modem) to BT plug (jackpoint), like here

cheers

Thought I'd post an update - rang Orcon yesterday to arrange a tech to come out. Was told it would be 3pm today, nothing happened by 4pm so I rang again - apparently Chorus requested "additional information" and no one at Orcon "followed it up" because it was 10 minutes before closing time... so had to ring again twice tonight to confirm a tech and was told no definitive time, but it was "ASAP".

There is no reason to have filters on a naked ADSL2+ connection, the filter is only used on normal ADSL lines i.e Phone/ADSL, never use them on a Naked ADSl2+ line it's not doing any justice.

Hight Attenuation usually means there's something interfering with the copper line, weather it be more than 4 Km from the exchange, or a break in the copper, water in the line.

In my experience with Naked ADSL2+ over the last 4 years with Orcon and Xnet, having more than 3 jackpoints won't make the slightest difference unless a jackpoint is broken, it would make a difference if it was normal adsl.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble but this is very dangerous advice to be spreading.

Filters on a naked connection are as essential as they are on a line with a phone, UNLESS the modem is plugged into a jackpoint that is the only jackpoint within a premises, wired either to the MDF/demarc or is the first jackpoint where wiring enters the property.

The biggest single problem affecting DSL speeds is poor internal wiring, and the main contributing factor is the NZ love of daisy chaining jackpoints. This causes reflections on the line that plug in filters also can't eliminate, hence the reason IMHO a master DSL filter should be a mandatory install for any premises where more than one jackpoint is wired up.

The average home with 3 jackpoints will receive an increase in sync speed with the installation of a master filter. That's something I'd even place money on.

Well I've worked for 4 ISP's one being iiNet in Aussie, and there is no way we would advised any customer to use an ADSL filter on any Naked ADSL2+ line, the filter is to block the physical phone line connection from interfering with ADSL and there is no phone connected to the copper line with Naked ADSL2+.

I have never in 4 years ever used an ADSL Filter on any of my Naked plans.
Rememeber if Orcon don't have their own hardwaer in the exchange your connected to they will use Telecom's instead as they have done with my currant Genuis plan because they don't have any Orcon hardware in my local exchange.

Chorus guys always screw things up in the exchange, I don't think their trained in installing ADSL1, 2 or naked unlike Aussie who have Tech's who only install phone lines and tech's who only install ADSL and ADSL hardware.

you could try a filter but I can guarantee you'll lose sync, goole this topic and I bet you won't find any information advised you to use a master filter on Naked ADSL2+ it will always advise you to remove any ADSL filters.

On a naked DSL line with no POTS (ie the line is not physically connected to the exchange so has no 48V on it) a master filter will still minimise the impact of poor wiring in the home, whether this be high attenuation caused by something simple such as corrosion in a jackpoint, or eliminating line reflection issues caused by multiple jackpoints wired in series.

If you've got naked DSL the best option is to have a single jackpoint wired straight into the MDF/demarc, or the incoming wiring.

The following URL makes intereesting reading, showing the performance difference using a master filter and no filter in a naked VDSL install.
