You haven't said what modem you are using but the simple answer is yes - modem performance can vary a lot, and there are a lot of older modems out there that won't work very well (or won't work at all) with the new Ikanos linecards being installed in the new ISAM's.

Does any one have any recommendations?   I have heard Draytek can be fairly good plus they can run in bridge/half bridge mode which is what I require.

taku: It is time to ditch Orcon and get broadband from other ISP.

My connection was 2Mbps with Orcon, it is now 19Mbps with Telecom.

one of my friend has also done switch, have speed changed from 1.8mbps to 17mbps.

It is definitely Orcon problem.

You need to make sure to give them a disconnection notice one month earlier to avoid any unexpected charges from Orcon.

Until all tests have been done (inc trying another router), blaming it on Orcon is not good cause to switch ISP.

Will you eat your post if the OP switches to another ISP and has the same problem ?

To the OP... borrow another branded router if you can and see what happens. If still occurs, then contact Orcon again and state youve tried another router and that you want the issue looked into further or you will be moving to another company.

my comment was based on

Well, I have been in contact with Orcon and they have had my connection moved to another port in the exchange. My download speed is now between 2.5Mbps and 3.5Mbps but mostly hovers around 3.00. Orcon have now washed their hands of the problem saying that they don't guarantee speeds. Here is a quote from them:

We cannot guarantee speeds, your download speed can be any between 1Mns to 24 Mbps and upload from 0.5 to 0.9

So much for ADSL2 and good speed.

I had the same experience as OP with Orcon. I have done all tests, inlcuding pulling out all domestic phone sets and change oiginal router which haven't even been touched for a very long time, etc etc

If Orcon does not want to take care of your speed, then why you can't just say good bye.

Both of these scenario's are classic examples of midspan injection caused by new cabinets, an issue I discuss here  in my blog post on this very issue.

Are Orcon to blame? That depends entirely on how you wish to interpret the situation that has arisen. If you did however raise the issue with Orcon and move to a wholesale connection off the very same cabinet your Telecom connection comes from you would see identical performance, as is the case with a growing number of people who have posted on here in the past few months who have suffered this very issue and had it solved by Orcon.

I don't believe there is I've seen people here saying the price remanded the same.

All these people with massive speed issues needed to be migrated to Cabinets hence when moving to Telecom their connection was automatically connected to a cabinet and thus a increase in speed.

Telecom don't tell ISP's when a user could or should be put on a cabinet they need to wait for the user to complain so its very hard to be proactive about this.

NOTE: Some people are automatically migrated to cabinets.

The Chorus cabinetisation schedule has always been public

They don't automatically migrate LLU lines to terminate on the cabinet, they leave them passing through to the exchange like the POTS service unless the ISP directs otherwise.

Telstraclear, Vodafone and even Slingshot have done a much better than Orcon by not putting people who they knew were going to be cabinetised on LLU.  Also pro actively moving people off LLU when they got cabinetised.

Unfortunately Orcon had a retarded policy: Sign users who they knew were going to be cabinetised up to LLU and then not do anything proactive to resolve the inevitable issue... just wait till the customer complains.

I'd call it epic fail and it's done quite a lot of damage to their brand/image/reputation.

thanks for your reply, after painstakingly calling orcon and waiting for someone to pickup the phone i decided to send them an email. Orcon replied to my email and they told me that they can move me to cabinet but it will cost us an additional $11 per month. i think this is absurd.

Orcon priced some of their initial ULL plans too cheaply, the result bing they would literally be losing money if they charged the same price over wholesale connections.

The choice is yours though - if you want a substandard connection you can keep the status quo. If you want a fast connection the option is there - I don't think that's absurd in any way. You are also free to move to any other provider, but potentially won't find any plans that are as cheap as the one you're on now.

To use Chorus equipment in the cabinet Orcon basically have to pay Chorus $30-40 per month out of your monthly fee, the price increase is needed or they would probably actually lose money providing your service.

i just felt that we have been a loyal customer of Orcon and have been othier providers have been knocking on our door just to move to their service. But of course Orcon won't know that we have been turning down other providers. Might be good for Orcon to include the the additional cost in their website so that people would know.

sbiddle's comment is right that it is still up to the user to chose which provider to use. its a competition out their for the ISPs.

It is your choice - but It'll be safe to say you won't get pricing as cheap as you have now with any other ISP. Why? Because as I mentioned above Orcon priced their products too cheaply.

Every ISP that uses a Chorus wholesale UBA broadband service pays the same price, this is regulated by the Commerce Commission. The use of the copper circuit between the exchange and your home is also a regulated product and everybody pays the same price. The price of copper access is cheaper than the UBA wholesale pricing, and Orcon only factored this into their ULL pricing, not wholesale UBA pricing. If they charged you the same price on a cabinet they would probably be losing money.

The choice if yours - suffer poor broadband performance or pay an additional $11 per month and receive a faster, more reliable broadband product.
