We've been on an Orcon Genius in Wellington for almost a year with almost no problems regarding speed and reliability. However, for the last few nights (I can't say if it's been an issue during the day as I've been at work), our connections to international websites and servers have been pretty shocking. Very high latency in WoW (partner not happy!), international websites "stalling" while loading, our business server taking forever to respond etc. etc.

I ran some tracert's tonight, and noticed that the latency appears to be caused by one link the chain that times out every single time - see excerpts below. Is anyone else experiencing anything like this?

I don't know if it could be related, but they've just started digging up the block next to mine for UFB. We aren't getting UFB in this phase of the rollout where I live, so I assume that the area they're working on is on a neighbouring cabinet or something? Is it possible we're sharing capacity while the work is being done?

Any help is super appreciated.

Ahh well at least the 8:30am street traffic is way less, but yep our BB traffic records have jumped enormously since the boys have finished school/tech.

We're not heavy users but there's three of us. The slowness isn't related to our usage - I already isolated everything except one device and the issue persisted.

Does school holidays really result in that much more network congestion in the evenings? I would have thought during school time the evenings would be just as busy?

I don't know, if other people are seeing high latency to international sites as well then I guess that's the explanation. Is this limited to Orcon? Because it's kind of annoying and if there's another ISP that handles the load better I'd probably switch over this. It's like having a dialup modem again!

Hi,

Yes I am having the same problem with International speeds and gaming. The latency is horrible and lag is a killer (literally). It started around Tuesday Wednesday last week. Yes also this only happens in international traffic the national tracert / taffic is fine.

I have logged a call with Orcon they have escalated the issue to there level 2 guys.

Orcon portrays itself as a premium service provider (have been with them for the past 5 years) however recently there service has dropped I mean really is congestion an answer? Wonder if the people with Telecom and are in the same exchange as me having the same problem.

I think it's pretty normal for some nodes not to respond to ICMP ping requests. As long as they are forwarding on to the next node, things should be working fine.

I think you'd want to look at the latency to the target, assuming it responds to ICMP ping requests. WoW servers could be experiencing high load levels.

I'm unsure if the Genius modem has QoS functionality, but you might want to try prioritising your gaming traffic.
