Full speed Downloads and like 1 or so for uploads, standard Genius account.

My line speed is fine, it just falls over when it hits Orcons international gateway.


You expect full line speed to international? That could be on the next Tui Billboard

Unless you have a SLA agreement it's best effort


Have you read any of this thread?

I do not expect full speed to international servers, I expect the same speed (I would accept better of course) to the same servers that I had before this problem arose.

I fail to see how "best effort" can drop from a average of 10Mbps to an average of 2Mbps with the occasional 4Mbps thrown in.

Yes I have read the thread,

It's called subscriber growth same as a motorway, More cars on the motorway slower the traffic flows

I accept growth, but you must also see that 2Mbos international connection is unacceptable.

Why even have boardband if thats the best you can get,  and if this is the best Orcon can do then I am wasting my time and I need to change providers.

unacceptable for you but many like myself would find 2Mbps fine, If you need a QoS on international you better open your wallet and expect to pay well over $1000 per month

I might add here also that Orcon have admitted that something is not right here, they just can't seem to fix it.


I'm not trying to argue here, I would agree you should not just accept the fact your getting slower speeds. I was simply sharing the cause for what might cause a speed issue after all this is Geekzone a large number of users here work in the industry.

2mbit per TCP thread would be completely acceptable to a US location however i would expect more then 2mbit total for multiple TCP threads, if your getting less this would signify shaping.

EDIT: oh last of all, things change routes change sometimes they might be good sometimes they might be bad. Only for specialized business accounts would you have any influence to those changes sadly that is the reality of residential Internet.

Nebbie: To me I sounds like normal congestion with Orcon.
What servers are you speedtesting to what is your sydeny speedtests like compaired to LA speed test and further away.

Example Sydney:


Harder to argue - I'm a business customer, which means my bandwidth is a different pool to residential and I still have the issues.  Although unlike the OP I also have issues open with Chorus relating to the physical line (Orcon's refusal to actually address this issue is why I'm moving away).

As you can see from your traceroute above your first jump of latency is between Odyssey and Cogentco this latency is normal for the distance between NZ and US  (the southern Cross latency is 130ms ish...) however the jump between Cogentco and Alter Net is rather high for a HOP withen the US.

This problem Is out of the control of Orcon and Odyssey, Cogentco may have changed routes between them and Alter net and thus the increased latency.... Some times this happens and there's nothing the end user can do.

As you can see from my traceroute above My ISP and their International transit carrier does not ever touch Cogentco so thus there's less latency.

I could be completely off base here but that looks like about 220ms ping or there abouts.
Not great but a lot more playable than the average of 300-350 I am getting with spikes up to 40k


Someone has to be responsible for Cogentco,
Surely it is up to my ISP to correct any issues along its route?

There's a reason that the company I rent dedicated servers from uses "No Cogent" as part of their sales tactics - Cogent is widely renowned as cheap and nasty transit, usually routing halfway across the planet to get a kilometre down the road. I've heard they're trying to clean up that perception, but stuff like this makes me less certain.

Yes to a degree your ISP is responsible however in this case is most likely its impossible for your ISP to have an issue fixed several carriers along the way.

What It possibly comes down to is a disagreement within cogent and their bandwidth provider and thus no more bandwidth has been purchased and thus the increased latency.... sadly there's no way to fix these issues.... other then yelling at people intill someone balls up and pays what ever is need to fix the problem.

Just like if Orcon failed to purchase more bandwidth from their provider and a website hosted within orcons network from AOL gets high latency its not AOL's problem to fix.

This is a problem with "The Internet" and there's no fix for it....

this destination host is in new york. orcon have suboptimal routing, but cheap prices. it doesn't look significantly broken to me.
