springheal: I appreciate all the feedback people as you have saved me from possibly much heartache like many of you. 

To explain--- I signed up with orcon for the fibre offer, but after reading all the feedback, I have since cancelled.

Currently, I am with slingshot's unlimited plan and all the time I am between 11 - 12 Mb/s. Just tried youtube @ 8.00pm with absolutely no buffering even on 720p hd and that goes for anytime of day/night.

In the meantime, I will sit tight on the unlimited broadband package which I have been on for ages and wait to see what slingshot has to offer on fibre. As I reside in wanganui, orcon is the only provider at present.

Thanks again to you all and may your perseverance reward all of you. 


In about the same boat in Hamilton. My flat mates are looking at getting UFB available as of this month. I talked them out of Orcon because of this thread. Bit of a shame really it looks to be a good value package from outside.

The question is can you trust an isp that provides horrible service for an entire month again? Or is it just the teething problems with unlimited (similar things happened to slingshot before they fixed it)

some issues have lasted longer than a month, like the australia degredation has been happening since january.

it's not just unlimited that's effected, but the problems seen significant enough that you'd think they'd give an official response with what's been happening, what they're doing about it etc.

although my speed tests might be higher the experience is rubbish compared to my adsl connection with vodafone where webbrowsing was as snappy as you could ask. for me it's been rubbish since day zero when it was installed in nov/dec last year

Thanks for being so upfront with us on this! I can think of plenty of times with a certain other ISP where they were caught short bandwidth wise, but I can't think of the last time an ISP fronted up and admitted it

Can I also join the chorus of being really happy with this? I'm about to sign up a 12mth contract with Orcon for Fibre and became doubtful pretty quick after browsing around to see what kinds of experiences people were having to the service.

When I called Orcon to find out more, the CSR (Sarah) was really REALLY helpful, and although she had to ask the Fibre team on how to handle my query (which was originally just asking if Orcon were aware of current issues), she came back to me with some good answers.

I mentioned that I'd read on this forum that there were still some ongoing issues for some customers and that there hadn't been an update from Orcon here since April 3rd, and that it would probably be a good thing to keep the messageboard in the loop since it's where most frustrations are being vented. Sarah said that was a good point and she'd pass it on.

Whether these 2 things are linked or not, that call was at 10:56 this morning and only a little over an hour later, here's a response from Quentin. Agreed - good on your for fronting up and not dancing around the issue, and please pass on my appreciate to the CSR who handled my call. I can only hope that any of you are lucky to get this person on the phone and that anyone else I deal with there is even half as obliging.

Now for the install!

Yeah thanks for fronting up about this problem Quentin but this seems to be a constant recurring problem on Orcons network.
Why does it take over a month to recognize that your going to run out of bandwidth, I'm pretty sure it doesn't take long for whoever you buy it from to add more to the pool a couple of clicks with a mouse and presto the tap turns and opens a bit more..... It seems that the people working for don't know how to estimate usage and react accordingly ....

1: look at current usage are we going to run low if yes then goto 2 if no then goto 3
2: order more bandwidth asap (before we run out)
3: wait and see if after 24 hrs it looks like a yes then goto 2 if no then return to 3
4: no network slow downs = happy customers and praise for Orcon (remember word of mouth is the best or worst advertising you can get)

how much simpler can it be

Gaming performance is beyond a joke today, getting nothing but lag, rubber banding, then eventually the game dropping on XBL... Getting so sick of this budget garbage fibre... absolutely useless!

If only it was that simple.... There would be no problem if it was that simple.

Orcon have contracts and there is provisioning SLA's with their transit providers, Putting in requests to Up the bandwidth can take up to 60 days. Not saying that's the SLA but thats the worst SLA I have seen.

Not making excuses for Orcon I don't work there, but I work in the line of work In fact the line of work of Bandwidth management. So I understand why orcon has taken sometime to fix this.

The other thing you have to look at is a ISP network is not simple, there is many links some 1gig some 10gig some maybe 40gig.... etc Increasing bandwidth may cause a another link that wasn't congested become congested because bandwidth was increase north of this link etc....

Thanks for the reply Nebbie that explains a lot but still it sucks to be an Orcon customer when this problem keeps recurring on an regular bases is there nothing that can be done to mitigate this type of problem from raring it's ugly head over and over again perhaps Orcon need to look at their providers and weed out the crap ones and find some that are better with better SLA's .. you don't see telecom having this same problem again and again or vodafone/TCL or just about any other ISP in NZ

and shouldn't Increasing the bandwidth mitigate congestion (ie: 4 lane highway that becomes an 8 lane highway)

Yes there is things they can do... But its a secret :)
I was playing Diblo 3 when my ISP got an attack too, it killed my game and I died. So I quit and loaded Flight Sim and fly from Invercargill to Auckland in one of those pencils :-P

Yea It sux when you as the customer gets impacted with issues you can fix...

Save yourself the hassle and avoid Orcon, they are worse now than Slingshot was back in the day...
