Topic # 114902 6-Mar-2013 19:18

Just wanting some info before I log a help desk call.

After my initial UFB woes, our internet connection was super stable for the past month or so. Always ~25mbps down and ~10mbps up - well for local traffic that is...

Then just in the past week we keep getting dropped connections and I have to reset the Genius. Now I'm not talking once a day but maybe 5-10 times a night sometimes. The reset mostly gets our internet back but sometimes not (ie it may take 2 resets to get a connection).

Is anyone else having this issue?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to

note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions

there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your

post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issued.

href="/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=96226">Read this discussion
to find out more about this. Your ISP is not

intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's

likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular

disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your

line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may sill try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance?

(very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Clasic - the robot doesn't understand the difference between fibre and copper :)

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend from $150 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

I would say ditch the cruddy Genius and get something decent like a SRP521 or FritzBox. Just better all round from what I have seen.

But maybe the Orcon boys have something more helpful to say. Maybe there is a firmware update or something?

Try resetting the router to factory default and set it up from scratch - the helpdesk will likely ask you to do this anyway so you'll save yourself some time in the long run

I have been having disconnects for the last month, noticed its worst at night at peak times. I also noticed my sync rate dropping when it reconnected itself. Usually a modem reset would fix but sometimes not.

Now I've been started reporting this to Orcon via twitter since the 30th of Jan. I tried a different genius modem, resets, interleaving, and had Chorus check my house and lines finding no fault. Orcon had weeks of playing around and still can't find a solution.

So after a month of interruption to my family and gaming, I have given up and planning on moving on. Very sad as I've been with Orcon a long time.

@tchart. I am on 30/10 UFB and my connection has been very stable since the genius firmware was updated to v1423. Are you on 1423?
