Hey guys,

I am having trouble setting us my new router given i am under the hammer of the genius plan. I am not sure what info i should be sharing but it would seem that the issues arise when i try to get my WAN and ISP configuration settings right on the new router. Its a new TP-Link and the auto setup is fine up until that point.

Any hints?

What type of connection? xDSL / UFB?

If it's UFB you'll need to make sure your device supports VLAN10 tagging and that you have this configured.

In which case there is nothing complex about your setup.

You just need to ensure you have VCI/VCI of 100/0 and VCMUX and are using PPPoA.

Yes. But then when I try and do the ISP configuration stuff it never works. It seems to be an orcon problem.

You can call their helpdesk to obtain your username and password information.
Or you could retrieve the automatically generated password which is automatically downloaded to Genius modems when they connect by following these steps: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=101091&page_no=2#871625

The Genius device pulls its settings automatically from our server. Your device won't be able to replicate that. Non-Genius routers aren't supported by the Orcon help desk on Genius connections.

If your Genius device connects properly for both data and voice then it is not an Orcon problem.

Genius plans require a specialised ADSL password that's different from your account password. You can get this out of the Genius with some config trickery but it's obviously not supported. Any reason why the Genius isn't acceptable considering you'd need to pay for it anyway?

for some reason my asus wireless chipset in my Pc i just bought wont work with it. Tried it at a mates and it is fine. Any tips for that I guess? Its a PCE -N15

No reason it shouldn't work, it's not like 802.11n is a new standard or anything.  What channel are you using on the router?

just all normal default stuff. Not tweaks or changes that should affect. The one time it did connect it was super slow, like 20X slower then my laptop and phone connection.

Turn off all DHCP etc in your router (leave WiFi on), and plug it in to the Genius (LAN port to LAN port) and your router should just act as a dumb Access Point.

 

Edit: I should also say, assign your router a fixed IP in the range of your Genius, but an address your will remember, and is outside of the Genius DHCP scope.

Log into your TP-Link router (plug it into your PC to start with, turn off the Genius temporarily), turn off DHCP. Set it with a Static IP address (so you can get back to it later if needed) and setup the Wireless (SSID and Security).

Disconnect the cable from your PC to the TP-Link.

Turn your Genius Back on.

Connect a cable from one of the LAN ports on the Genius to one of the LAN ports on the TP-Link.

Connect to the wireless you configured on the TP-Link. All should be good.
