I had a fault today with our xnet vfx lines not ringing and the other person could not hear us.  I rang xnet and they said Orcon Genius does not work with VFX.  Kind of odd since it has worked fine for 3 months and after a Genius reboot it worked again...but I digress.

Whilst I had the VFX fault I tried another modem as part of the fault finding process, an SMC7904WBRA-N2 which always worked fine with Xnet DSL, VFX and other voip services.

However I couldn't get it to work with Orcon.  Does Orcon lock you to the Genius modem only or should any modem with suitable settings work?

I used
myname@orcon.net.nz
password *****
VPI-0
VCI-100
PPOA
VCMUX
ADSL-2

Has anyone else go their own modem working with the Orcon Genius plan?

At one point Genius has the SIP ALG enabled by default which caused all sorts of issues with SIP devices behind it.

I'm guessing that's not the case with us as a reboot fixed the registration problem.  Still good to know thanks.

Should non Orcon Genius modems work ok?

PS I don't use the internal Genius voip service as I have that registered on my Asterisk PBX.  So the missing dual phone lines is not an issue.

I have configured CLI based Cisco's fine, on VDSL and ASDL for data at least, there isn't any trickery that I am aware of on the GENIUS or behind that either that would stop that from working.

However like anything third party, it will be completely up to you to support it.

For VoIP however, I might leave up to someone else to comment on as I am unsure if it must be the GENIUS modem to get VoIP running, although I am fairly certain other GZ users have gotten third party CPE's working successfully on Orcon VoIP.

I've just re-read this, perhaps I'm not understanding exactly what you're try to accomplish?

sorry if itis confusing, was mixing two items in one post.  The problem with the VFX registration (now fixed with a reboot) caused me to try a different ADSL modem to see if could isolate the voip registration problem.

I tried using an SMC ADSL modem in place of the Genius to see if it worked.  I found when using the settings below that I whilst I got ADSL lock, I could not register on the Orcon network with my login and password.  This could have been finger trouble of course.  However the question is, should a third party ADSL2+ modem be able to access the internet service in place of the Genius modem.  Just pure ADSL/internet connection?

Your PPP password is not the same as your account management password :)  If you actually need one (only some connection types do) you will have to either ask us for it or extract it from your modem.

Tried CS but Manila won't put me through to Auckland and they won't tell me the password either :( Great.

Anyway I downloaded the modem config file and found the password that way.

Perhaps Manila could be a touch more helpful with such a question. I realise there is no support for third party modems, I wouldn't expect it. But having a hot back is useful if you have to wait a few days for an Orcon replacement.

First: Orcon has always made it very clear that they do not support use of any alternative hardware. End.
Second: The Manilla helpdesk is severely limited in what it can offer, outside the usual scripted questions and answers.

Thanks for the hint on the password, I much appreciate it.  I can really understand why you don't accept third party hardware support and in hind sight, the call to CS was not a good idea.

I appreciate you guys spending time on Geekzone offering support for the more unusual stuff.  Overall the experience with Orcon has been great since joining Jan 1st this year.  Fantastic speeds on the unlimited plan.

Thanks guys.

As a follow up, how would I find out if I need a login/password at all for my connection?  The current Genius modem shows a login and password entered in the modem so does that mean I need it?
