Hi,

I was just wondering if there is any way to squeeze any more speed out of my ADSL2+ connection. I am on the Orcon Unlimited plan. I sync at 14.9/1, I have an attenuation of 23.5dB and my SNR Margin is 9.1dB. According to my attenuation my line length is 1.7km although I live 800m away from the exchange by road. Please let me know if there is any way to get any more speed.

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

well then you have the same options as me:

1) move closer
2) bribe Chorus to upgrade your area
3) rewire your whole connection back to the cabinet/exchange with new cable/fibre and see how Chorus feel about their free upgrade
4) SOOL - cry (though as I'm on just-about-ONE-Mb and youre more than 10 times that, maybe not an option for you)

Fair comment but I think if it was me I would get Orcon to do a pre-qualify check on your line, just in case you are close enough to get VDSL2.
Probably the first thing to do is check the Chorus maps and if your exchange does VDSL2 and you are in the area a pre- qualify would be the next step.
You never know.




Now on 2talk Network and it's better.

Yeah I would be really surprised if you could get VDSL with those line stats, Chorus are meant to "abort" a VDSL install if the attenuation gets to high when they attempt to install VDSL. I would run your address through the website, that will give you an idea of whether it may be feasible or not. If it is, it will prompt you to give us a call to confirm, if not it will flat out tell you that.
However, a manual prequalification supersedes all, as I have often said and a prospective install is subject to that being positive before a technician will even attempt installation.
