Just got my Fibre installed.  I play LOL on the north american server and with DSl I was getting 180 ping and it was perfect all the time.

With fibre I randomly get 150 or 180 ping.  The first day I played it worked perfectly.  Since then I have been experiencing rubber banding and its getting worse to the point I can't play anymore.  I play with my mates who live down the road and they are not experiencing any issues but they are on DSL.

Anyone else on orcon DSL and playing on NA LOL servers?

Anything I can try to see what the issue might be?

Try to find the server address that you're connecting to in the states and trace route/ ping test/ smoke ping/ path ping to it. First step find the IP that you're connecting to.

Assume you are connected by ethernet not WiFi?

Are any other devices connected to the modem by any means? If so check for seeding (uploading) going on, that can cause jitter on the downstream.

Single computer.  No other computers connected to this fiber.  Not wireless.

Well it is a league of legends server so the actual server address is hidden but people do ping tests on this ping 216.52.241.254 for the server.

Pinging that it is around 170 ping but every 30 seconds it jumps to 230 for a few seconds.  I am not getting any packet loss.

This is also a thing for VDSL customers as well at least for me.
Ping can variant between 153-200, and I don't mind this (ping changes and varies game to game).
LoL does have an oceanic server and I'm surprised OP isn't using the server since it's based in Australia but I'm sure there's a reason.

im on telecom and i get the same thing

i would say its something outside of NZ causing it and there is not much you can do about it

Do you have fibre?

I have Telecom ADSL and I don't get it when using my DSL.  And I have never had it before.   It's actually more playable tethering my 4G on my phone.  Also my friends who live in Hamilton also don't have any issue.

Are you saying its a fibre issue?

That spike in the second hop is probably just ICMP being de-prioritized. and after that it's smooth sailing. Just pecause your ICMP packets take a bit longer to get places doesn't mean your udp/tcp stuff is. Try some more prolonged tests with a udp ping utility.

"Rubber banding" in gaming is typically when your character quickly "bounces" backward to a previous location (kind of like a bungee cord) - often indicates the server is correcting for mispredicting your movement when you have high latency or packet loss.

For reference, I don't get this issue in LoL, I am on Telecom fibre.

The Oceanic server doesn't support several game modes and doesn't have the population to support those game modes.  And only supports ranked for one game mode, so there is no point playing on that server for me (though I do occasionally).

On my DSL I get 170-220, but it rarely moves around within a single game.  It's stable.  The ping changes during the time of day rather than during a game (which lasts about 30 mins).

On my fibre during the game it is sitting at 150 then every 10-30 seconds or so jumping to 180+ for about 2 seconds.  It might be spiking higher but the spikes are so short the in game ping prolly doesn't show it.

Well another gamer explained the term.  Rubber banding or pauses then hyper speed, similar thing caused by similar issues, minor lag spikes.  Im getting both.

I'm not really sure why I would care about my 2nd hop.  The tracert was just for the orcon guys.  I don't really have any issue with the trace.

I have already done prolonged ping tests and mentioned its spiking and the in game spikes coincide with my ping window.

It could just be a tempory issue and might go away I don't know.  Just annoying I can play fine on my DSL but not on my fibre which has a much better ping.

Its probably worth mentioning too that the low ping from Fibre can only been seen and guaranteed within our network. Outside of our own network we cannot guarantee you the low ping times that you would see nationally. That's just not going to happen. 

Seeing as you're going to the other side of the world, chances are you're taking the same path over there from our network, when you were on DSL that you are now that you're on fibre. Why it was lower on DSL we couldn't really tell you, perhaps you were even taking another route over for one reason or another. For Australian servers we might be able to provide some manipulation there, might. 
How on earth you play with 180 ping though is beyond me, I normally get about 33/66ms when I play Dota, on an Australian server, anything higher than 100/120 is a pita, for me at least. 

Someone also posted here about the ping time increasing on the second hop of the trace route. Probably worth mentioning again that ICMP traffic is de-prioritised on our core network, so expect some increase there.

Yesterday I was playing BF4 with 310 ping, it was probably a US server.

Is really frustrating when someone gets an idea then everyone else runs with it.  I do not have a problem with how high or low my ping is. 

There is some instability causing small spikes making games unplayable,  I am also getting it in other games.

I am not sure if it is a problem on local trafic servers as my ping is so low a small spike would probably not make much difference.  I will do some more testing.
