I have just looked at the Orcon address checker and for the first time ever it shows Fibre is available at my address laughing


Looking at this forum there are no threads that address the questions I have.  I currently have a Genius box (NF4V) with homeline.  Some months ago bought a Netgear Orbi box and that is now plugged into the Genius on a LAN port.


In looking at the upgrade options on the Orcon website, the implication is that a new contract (with a new minimum contract period) is required.  I cannot upgrade the connection type on the same contract I have at present - I start again with a new 12/24 month contract.  When I joined Orcon (2006 or so) it was owned by Seeby Woodhouse so I have a major issue with being asked to sign up to a minimum contract period as if I am a new customer.  Way back then, one of the reasons for choosing Orcon was that they offered a no-minimum-period option.  If Orcon cant offer the seamless upgrade I am looking for then I will look at other ISP options.  I would appreciate feedback from anyone who has gone down this path.


It would appear from this thread that with Fibre the same basic building-blocks are needed downsteam of the ONT - a Genius box into which the Orbi and phone is conected.  Is this still the case?

Orcon customer here; I have UFB with the white Orcon-branded NF4V router; my mesh WiFi units are connected to the NF4V, and my phone would be if I was using one.  We dropped the landline a year or so ago - only ever got rung by TeleSales or spammers.


My view regarding re-signing a contract is it's not a big deal. I've been a customer for years, don't have any reason to change, a 12-month contract isn't a big deal, AND I got better pricing when I re-signed.  I'm fairly sure I've re-signed term contracts with Orcon 3 or 4 times now.


WRT to your existing genius; it may still be connected to and provisioned from their old back end; but new services will definitely come from the new provisioning system, which is why they want to give you a new unit - it'll know to talk to the new backend "out of the box" (firmware). 


I imagine the process will go something like:


* get the fibre connected, ONT placed, etc


* on "go live" day, you connect the new NF4V to the ONT, turn it on, and then connect your internal cabling (phone and WiFi) to that, and then turn the old box off and send it back...


It should be as seamless as that.  It was for me.

Having looked at competitive options I have decided to stay with Orcon.  While I resent that as a long-standing customer I have to sign up to a minimum contract period or pay a termination fee, competitive non-contract offerings are few and more expensive.  Orcon have offered Fibre 100mbps at the same price as my current ADSL service and I keep the current (NF4V) router so not a bad deal.
