I've changed to orcon for about 2 months already, and the first day i changed, problems began to occur. My UL and DL noise margin has dropped to 6 and DL noise margin sometimes even drop to 3 or jump to a ramboo no like 2312341234. It happens almost everyday now which is quite annoying because when you're playing games or streaming animes online you would want a connection with stable speed and doesn't dc all the time.

As if that wasn't enough, it seems to me that the orcon UL usage is another big problem. Sure i use BT sometimes to dl stuff (like who doesnt nowadays) but after just one week, my dl usage is 4 Gb, and most importantly my UL usage is like 9 Gb! I checked from my dl helper and i am 100% sure that it should be below 2 GB upload. Sure, theres other places which can take up my ul usage, but how the hell do i upload 7 gb of data just by playing games occasionally and browsing on the net? I realise that the usage seems to be leaking just by having my modem turned on, so i even turn off my modem whenever im not by the computer, but the problem continues without a reason!

Noise margin should not jump around like that. 

If you are on ADSL 2 the noise margin is set to 6 as a default.  This seams to give the best speed vs reliability.

Orcon use the noise margin to stabilise the line and only really change it if there is problems stabilising the line (ie  heaps of noise)

From the Sounds of it you may have a line fault, I would advise:

A:  Try a new modem (borrow one or buy on with a 14 day money back guarantee.....test and return it)

B: Log a fault ticket and get your ISP to look in to the line, there may be a fault and it looks like there is IMO. Make sure you tell them this is happening and they will know there’s something up as it should not change that drastically.

Id try another modem first though, fastest way to diagnose the fault.

I have an older modem that isnt adsl2+ competible, but works with the connection, can i use it for testing?

BT will chew up ur monthly usage really badly. a good estimate is 2x the thing u wanna download. If u download 4gb, make it 8gb as the total amount u will use. which in your case sounds about right. BT not only sends data but also a lot of peering protocols which in time adds up to your usage.

The longer u leave BT dragging on (slow speed downloads) the more extra data it will use for peering protocols etc. The shorter u use BT (Super fast downloads) the less extra usage BT will use. But in general speaking, 2x the data u wanna download is your estimate

It's quite possible that you are uploading more than you are downloading using BitTorrent.  What do you have your DL/UL limits set at?

bazzer: It's quite possible that you are uploading more than you are downloading using BitTorrent.  What do you have your DL/UL limits set at?


UL limit is 4KB/S and no DL limit

Better give them a ring and ask them maybe.  Otherwise, you need to scan your computer for nasties I think.

P.S. 4KB/s is a pretty stingy UL, I hope you're not on any torrents I use.  That is an example of everything that is wrong with BitTorrent.  I'll bet you're the first to complain when your DL speeds are low too?  Share and share alike, man.  Unless you only changed it to a low limit to test about your problem, in which case I apologise for jumping to conclusions.

I wont deny the fact that im pretty stingy about the UL, but as you all know this is NZ. Who would care about the ul in bt if you're living in China or Korea etc? My friend from hk said he didnt even know there was such a thing called data usage untill he came to NZ.

Fair enough.  Well, i hope you sort your problem.  I haven't noticed any discrepancies in Orcon's data reporting for me.

same problem here too snr bounces around like a flippin yoyo from 12.3db down to 2.0db at times,
and iv'e tried 3 diferent modems to boot looks like it may require the intervention of a corus callout
