I've noticed recently that my internet connection has been behaving relatively well, actually it's been unbelievably reliable and pretty damn quick!  Considreing some of the problems I have encountered over the last 3 months.

Because of the performance and reliablity issues I have endured over the last 3 months - frequent disconnections, high latency, slow performance - I've gone to the effort of monitoring my internet connection and graphing ping times to various local and international sites (using Cacti - a RRDTool based graphing solution).  I've been somewhat disappointed/well-pleased (dpending on how you look at it) to see that my graphs, except for the odd spike here and there, have been pretty much straight line for the last three days:

My connection status is currently showing 3 days 8 hours and counting.  Previously, the maximum time I've ever had for a single connection session was around 22 hours 30 minutes.  My speed tests have been pretty consistent throughout the day.  This can't be right, I thought to my self, something must have drastically changed?  Indeed, I checked the status page on my Orcon Home Hub and have noticed that the firmware has changed:

Previous firmware: 2.3.49.7.0
Current firmware: 2.3.52.6.200

I've picked up on the following changes with the latest firmware:
  • DHCP clients are now displayed on the Local Network status page.  This was not displayed at all previously.
  • ADSL line information now reports both downstream and upstream stats.  Only downstream was reported before.
  • Port forwarding table is now displayed correctly (one line per entry) and not skewed across multiple rows
  • There appear to be more options available under the Telephony settings although I can't be sure as I've not paid to much attention to this section previously.
It's great that things are going well now for my internet connection, however, I would have liked to have been advised before hand that there was going to be a firmware upgrade.  Is it normal practise for an ISP/Telco to upgrade equipment on a customer site without advising them first?  The firmware upgrade appears to have gone through without any hick ups, however, if things weren't so smooth then I would be not too happy that there was no warning of any impending change.

Questions for Duncan:
  1. Is it possible to get some more details about what changes there are between this latest firmware and the previous version?
  2. Is it possible to get notification prior to firmware upgrades being released?

Same here, I used to get the 23 hr disconnect every day but looking at my connection as of late I’m not getting the disconnection at all.

Apparently the firmware up dates is automatic and the end user will not need to/be informed.

There will be more updates to come (adding more functionality to the home hub) in the near future (don’t ask me when)

Ill check the Version number of my hub when i get home and post it here.

How many people out there have been upgraded to this new firmware?

I'm still sitting on 2.3.49.7.0 and my router has been dropping the adsl link a lot lately. Would hope that the upgrade might solve this.

Can anyone at Orcon shed some light on whether this is a completed upgrade or is it still in progress?

On 2.3.49.7.0 here also.

Rang up Orcon yesterday about updating my firmware and got told that they would see to it.
Nothing has happened yet and I have not had anymore information about it from Orcon.
It has already disconnected once in the last 24 hours and I have lost my port forwarding which I rely on, had to re-enable it.
A big problem when you need to rely on it.
If it takes to long to update the software I will be forced to go back to a Router that I can RELY on and then the home hub will never get updated, a pity because I would rather use it.

Duncan what is involved in updating your home hubs firmware and how long does it take for it to be done.

After getting updated I get disconnected if I don't stay active on the internet for a certain duration.

My home hub will be disconnected with phone1 and phone2 highlighted in red.
I'd have to unplug the hub to reset it a couple of times until it will eventually connect again.

This means you are using the older firmware. The recent firmware should have fixed this. My Gigaset used to crash at around 11pm at night and wouldn't resync/reauth until 10 mins. later. This has now stopped happening.

Another thing I noticed was that in the previous version, once VOIP settings are saved initially no further editing was possible unless you start over with a factory reset. This has been fixed as well.

My Uncle has a Homehub that he has yet to install, he has had it in the box a while because he is still using a Netgear for the time being.
I would like to upgrade the firmware on the Homehub to the latest version before connecting it to the Orcon DSL.
Does anyone know where I can get the firmware download so that I may do the upgrade manually?
Many thanks.

Orcon are the only ones who can update the home hub over the internet.
So if your home hub is not connected to Orcon it will never get updated !
According to the Orcon help desk there is supposed to be an update this week.
I haven't seen it yet.........
So if you want your home hub updated use it to connect to Orcon.

Ok thanks for that.
So I will just have to tell my Uncle to ride out all the disconnect issues the first firmware had until they upgrade the firmware remotely.
Hope I time it right.
