So if you can keep a P2P link going for hours, then you are connected to the Interenet.  If it is a DNS problem, you could try changing to another DNS server such as OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220).  I'd suggest changing the DNS IP address in your router rather than in Windows.

Right, I'll try a new DNS. I just had an awesome chorus techie come around, had a look and did some tinkering. Half-decent connection now!

Does anyone think that this has anything to do with the dilemas? (12:36 pm today)

19/01/09 12:36 pm Scheduled Maintenance: During this week (19/02/09 - 23/02/09) our network engineers are carrying out upgrades to our core network that may cause service disruption

It's pretty poor planning to post it today for scheduled maintenance that happens from today onwards, and the dates are wrong!

It says to call them up if you have a connection with disruptions.

Well, to be fair, this is progress for Orcon.  At least they're telling us that there might be a problem before they start the work and break something.

The chorus techie said that Orcon are relatively new to ADSL2, and that he would switch me back to an ADSL1 profile, which is more stable. Would you all like me to ask him of his processes so that I can document them here?

From what I gathered, he disconnected all jack points, except for the one that I use. Now getting about 7800~ kbps! He said he would take me to the exchange, which isn't as close as I thought, and SHOW me how to fix it! (Should he really take that risk....? Mwahahahaha....No, be nice! NICE!) Sorry, talking to myself.... I'll be back in the morning before work. If you would like me to take notes on how to get your techie to fix this, say so! This thread has been going since Early December!

The other interesting thing about this is (if I'm reading this right), is not only do you have huge attenuation for someone that is very close to the exchange, but your Upstream attenuation is higher than your Downstream attenuation. The attenuation of most twisted pair transmission lines gets higher as the frequencies increase. Here you seem to have the opposite - the lower frequency Upstream (63 dB) has more attenuation than the higher frequency Downstream (50 dB).

I’ll just have to go with you on that. I have NO idea about the extremely technical side of things.


I guess what I'm getting at here, is when you have a tranmission line that doesn't behave like a transmission line, you have to ask yourself why?

Not really was just interested in finding out what finally fixed it. Yes ADSL2 is a lot less stable than ADSL1. Sounds like the connection was so flakey it was trying to reconnect with the best possible stats it could (3584 is pretty high for ADSL1 but kinda low for ADSL2). Your log didn't list what modulation method you were connecting at (ADSL2,G.Dmt, G.lite etc)

That is what is called an isolation test. It could be an indication that there is something wrong at the CPE end.

Considering that for my telecom training course we had to pull some major strings to get access to the central hamilton exchange I'm really doubting he would be able to get you in there.

Yeah the thread's been going since early december but I do believe some of the people who posted in this thread have had their connection issues resolved. Regardless what worked for you may not necessarily work for others :D

I started this thread because of the dropout problems I was having with Orcon+.  It seems that there was a fault with their equipment in the Onehunga exchange, and the dropouts every 2 days or so are no longer happening.  But their service is still pretty unreliable compared with what I had previously from Telecom Wholesale.

Hi!

He went down (I was still at work.... bloody managers) and just switched my port at the exchange, now I have had a constant connection for 5 hours!

So: IF YOU ARE HAVING THESE DROPOUT ISSUES, GET YOUR CHORUS TECHIE TO GO TO THE EXCHANGE AND CHANGE YOUR PORT THERE!

That really did the trick for me! So, yeah!
