Hi all,

Couple of months ago I started noticing my internet speed getting slower and slower by the day... eventually it got really bad and it’s still is really bad... I’m supposed to have ADSL2+ and my download speed to chch or welly is 512kps... you can imagine my international...

anyway long story short, and after getting my port reset by orcon several times and orcon mucking me around for month and a half, I made a complaint and things started happening.. they started investigating and came down to the conclusion that my Linksys (ADSL2MUE) ADSL modem (which is a ADSL2+ modem) is the cause and I should get something that was made 6 months ago etc... I might add I’ve had that modem for years without any issues.

So I go and buy another Linksys (WAG200G)... anyway no improvement on my internet speed... I let orcon know, nothing happened after couple of emails etc... called in and made another little complaint, they rang me back and say Linksys is not compatible with their systems/equipment... and that I should get a dynalink...

now before I take this further and really have a go at them...

is this true, or are they just too lazy to configure their systems properly to work with all ADSL2+ modems... I mean we all know what happened with the Caller ID fiasco which got eventually solved (half assed solution I might add)...

any comments would be appreciated...

P.S. I don't like their customer service and IVR system... and I'm actually thinking of going back to telecom…

So am I...and your not the only one experiencing slow speeds and in my case terrible latency and packet loss. No International Bandwidth from Orcon = No Customers

Sounds like you're getting dicked around, bgorgees.  Nothing irritates me more than incompetent support personnel who give unqualified advice.  Are you on Orcon+ (LLU) or just Orcon? And what rates does your modem sync at? If your sync rate is the cause of your poor download speeds, then there may be a grain of truth to what Orcon has told you, although it's still improbable.

Am I the only one who thinks you should try a modem that is actually COMPATIBLE with their equipment first?

In saying that, Telecom > Orcon

right...
when they first told me I should try another modem, I asked them what should I get and all I got told was anything built within the last 6 months... Linksys is a very popular brand in Australisa... and to go and get equipment that is not compitable with Linksys or only works with one brand, in my view is totally inept... Yell...

I have been with orcon+ since it came out, and my modem was working fine till the last couple of months.. i.e. they either changed something and don't know what they did.. or don't know how to use the equipment.. or they don't know what the issue is so they're just going around guessing things.. generally a modem can work with several protocols as well.. so that's why i don't believe it's a modem issue...
and they wouldn't give me a technical answer to why they think its a modem issue.. all they said was we think its your modem.. no actual proper answer..

they are sending me a dynalink (YUCK) to try out for bit...

Interesting

Can you paste your current line attributes from your router please.

Also, as a long shot, ask the Orcon CSR to try you on an different ADSL profile, maybe even an ADSL1 profile. It has been known to solve speed issues like yours.

Generally, im sure most customers have a good experience. I am getting fantastic speeds and I do not regret choosing Orcon. They have no contract so if you are unhappy, feel free to leave!
