I'm on Orcon+ unbundled and my ADSL connection speed has recently dropped from around 6Mbps to around 2MBps. I raised a ticket via the Orcon website and was asked to carry out the usual tests (run Speedtest, try switching microfilters etc.) which I did, with no joy. Since then I haven't heard anything back from Support.

Has anyone else been having any problems recently? I'm in the Browns Bay area.

Cheers,

Martin

Ring them... you'll never get anywhere on e-mail.  Sure, you may or may not be put on hold for awhile, but it's better than waiting days for an e-mail reply that will probably never come.

When you do ring, and establish the basic diagnostics that you've already covered, ask for a port reset (assuming they haven't already tried that).  If you've noticed any difference in the line stats (attenuation, noise margin, etc.) other than sync rate, then that could help explain the problem as well.  If a port reset doesn't fix it... well, I'm not familiar with the exact diagnostic options available, but I think they can rebuild the port config from scratch as well or maybe even try a different port if there are any available.  Obviously if the problem is not at the DSLAM end then none of that will help, but it doesn't hurt to try.

I once had a sync rate drop from 5400 kbps to 3400 kbps with Ihug... pretty sure they tried a reset, and even lowered my SNR margin to around 6-8 dB to get up to 4400 or so, but it wasn't until I switched to Orcon, and presumably had the port config re-applied from scratch as part of the process, that things returned to normal.  That was all on Telecom wholesale of course.  It should be much easier to get any DSLAM port issues sorted out when your ISP actually owns and runs the equipment (as in your case).

LOL....good luck Martin. It took me months to sort my connection out with Orcon. Now I'm happy again.

http://www.orcon.net.nz/about/article/cabinetisation_what_does_it_mean_for_orcon_customers/

Specifically this part..

1. If you are already connected on an unbundled Orcon+ plan and your line is connected to a roadside cabinet then it is likely that the speed at which your modem sync's (your connection speed) will be negatively affected. This ranges from a small impact, through to (in a small percentage of cases) making your connection unusable. In the event that your connection is severely affected we are more than happy to discuss alternative options with you. This may include the option to transition back to our traditional Orcon network. The intention will be to transition you to an unbunled Orcon+ service from the cabinet once we are able to install our own equipment in the cabinets (sub loop unbundling), sometime later in 2009.

That happened to me, when my area got cabentised 2 of our DSL connections got much better sync speeds (xnet and xtra) but the Orcon LLU connection was 650kbit - down from about 4.5mbit!  Orcon's solution was to move the connection to a wholesaled port from telecom which was fed by the cabinet.

Thanks for this thread!!

I am also in the Browns Bay area and had wondered about my speed, it went from 8Mbps down to 2Mbps as well with the same attenuation and noise level.

Has anyone had any success getting a response from Support on this? I get an occasional email asking me if my problem has been resolved - I then respond to say No, but nothing happens until the next message asking me if my problem has been solved......

There is really nothing they can do until sub loop unbundling is worked out and they can install their own equipment in roadside cabinets.

Alternatively in the Orcon blog post I linked earlier they stated they could switch you off Orcon+ onto a Orcon non + using Telecom equipment if the problem is bad enough.

I understand, which is why I haven't really been kicking off big-style. What I'd like is some acknowledgement from Support that this is the problem and (ideally) some indication of how long it's likely to be before the SLU stuff progresses.

There was supposed to be a Commerce commission "Standard Terms Determination for Sub-loop Services" conference in December, no idea if it went ahead,

well i like orcon's data charges, 25GB for $20 is hard to beat in nz, so i'll be sticking with them.

but yeah, they could acknowledge this better imho, put cabinetisation link on more obvious spots etc...

all in all, looking forward to the completion of ppc-1 and ppc-2 and with that some real changes to nz broadband market.

I had all the same issues as discussed here - dropped from 7mbs to 1.5mbs and live in St Heliers. I am being changed back to the standard Orcon network. Two steps back, one step forward...
