Initially contacted Orcon at the beginning of this month as I got a mailer that said "Orcon+ is now available, etc..."  ok, sounds great- try to sign up online...  My address isn't showing up as being in the Orcon+ network.

So call to sign up, give all my details, etc...  They have to talk to provisioning team to see if it is in fact available in my area...  They'll call back in two days.  Two days go by, still haven't heard anything.  Call them back and they check adjacent apartments and find that mine is the only one showing that it's not in the Orcon+ network- presumably because I was already on Naked DSL.  (My assumption not theirs)  So get everything rolling, and I'll get an email about my provisioning date.  Sounds good.

Get the email that I'm going to be switched over on the 18th of March.  Groovy.  Get home after work, nothing is working now- so obviously I've been moved over.  Only thing is, the line is completely dead, no modem sync no nothing...  So call in, spend about 30 minutes trying different jackpoints and cables despite my telling the rep that it was working perfectly well with my previous provider...  Ok, have to contact Chorus to get it checked out...  Don't hear anything on the 19th, call back in and find out that Chorus will sort me out on Friday the 20th.  Cool.

Chorus sorts out the wiring issue and now I'm getting Sync.  (14mb/900k)  I'm also getting an IP address...  Woot!  But...  Can't browse anywhere, everything times out.  Getting about 80% packet loss to everything (including orcon.net.nz)...  Ok call back in, told that I need to capture pings and tracerts to a few sites throughout the world and email them...  Ok, don't hear anything back until the following afternoon.  Technical support say the problem is with my modem- so basically "it's not our problem"...

Buy a new modem (previous modem was Linksys WAG54GP2 V2), I know, everyone hates Linksys, but was rock solid with WxC for nearly a year, syncing anywhere from 10mb-12mb downstream...  So get an SMC Barricade 7904BRA2.  Flash the newest firmware (released in Feb 2009) and set everything up.  Syncing around (14.5mb/900k), and get an IP address.  WOOT!  But...  Everything still timing out...  IDENTICAL in every way to my "old" modem...

Call back in this evening (26th), the rep tells me he's going to switch my profile because my line looks like it's unstable because he's seen quite a few disconnections.  This is most likely due to my configuring the new router and trying various settings whilst waiting on technical support, but sure, let's try...  So ten minutes later I restart the modem as instructed, get sync at (9.3mb/690k), but same problem...   Over the last 30 minutes I've been waiting in the queue to speak to another representative, I'm getting 81% packet loss to orcon.net.nz...

So basically I've spent over a week without the internet, countless hours waiting on hold, $100 on a new modem that it doesn't look like I needed in the first place and I'm still no closer to getting this resolved.

Someone please help?

Nasty nasty

Grab a HomeHub from Orcon for $5/month - at least then they pretty much own the problem end to end and once it is sorted you can ditch it again (or just keep it like I did :-) )

I had very annoying issues with my Linksys when i first joined their + network here in Wellington (Courtenay Pl xchange). The sync would drop every minute or so (saw about 180+ reconnections in the account section of the orcon site). Problem was solved by using their dynalink modem. Speed was great but it leapt up about 2000kbit more with the Homehub i now rent!
