I just changed form ihug/vodafone

We have all noticed it is slower... mainly laggy.

example:

click a webpage and watch my app that shows speed..  it often sits on dialup download for 3-6 seconds and then speeds up a bit.

sometimes the pages just seems like it will never load

click stop  click refresh and it often takes off.

speed tests show it is maxing out at between 3 and 5 mbs depending on time of day and whos website i use to do a speed test.

So why would this suddenly change when i swap to Orcon?

someone mentioned something about Orcon using some switch that is on where vodafone doesnt . cant find the post but it was something like interleaving or some name like that.

any ideas?

it is very strange.  we all noticed it from the day we switched over... and thats been a few weeks now

Factor's that affect perceived "internet" speed

1: Your PC's speed and tcp/ip settings (MTU, window size etc)
2: Quality of your ADSL modem/router
3: Quality of your phone/ADSL filtering
4: Quality of your house wiring
5: Quality of you phone line to the exchange/cabinet
6: Cabinet/Exchange port quality
7: Congestion on the backhaul network to your ISP
8: ISP's hand over links
9: ISP's internal network, caching, shaping, traffic management
10: ISP's national and international bandwidth route and quality

Probably something in 6-10 for you.

As Ragnor mentioned 6-10 most likely your issue.

Diff ISPs use different providers/routes for different sites/networks etc. So Vodafone may have been using provider A to route your traffic to site ABCDEFG.COM whereas now youre on Orcon and they use provider B to get to ABCDEFG.COM and unfortunately provider B is slower than provider A.

You'll never get an ISP that offers great connections to every site, too many variables etc out there.

OK, that answered my question, the Red network does not happen in queenstown. As Ragnor has said items 6-10 are most likely your problem

My guess would be you are using the wrong DNS servers, hence why there is some lag between websites.

Check that your DNS servers are not hard coded. They should be set to server assigned.
