Aaroona: Been looking into your issue and I am convinced that its nothing on our end thats causing the slowdown.

You have a 15mbit sync speed, connected to a LLU exchange which has _heaps_ of backhaul spare, even at peak times. The Auckland speedtest is connected to APE, which we connect to at 1Gig, which is not even half full.

Your line has no errors on it and not showing any CRC errors when doing data transfers, and loopback line tests come up clean.

Edit: Also make sure you are using Orcon server assigned DNS servers.

yitz: Nice.. a YouTube cache just like Telecom.

They could wrap it in a bow and play a jingle for all I care, I just want non-stuttering Youtube viewing, which I now have Smile

Have checked, and checked again.

Using the assigned DNS servers which my router gave me (10.1.1.1) and tried using the orcon ones, still no good.

Did a few speed tests this morning, and it still sucks.

tried streaming a bit of youtube, and still waiting long periods of time just to get a 60second video..

I'm using a Netgear 834G

Never had any problems with speeds until about 4 days ago. has been running fine for months now. I remember having 1 hickup like this before, and it corrected itself after a day or so.
However, this time it hasn't, and I'm getting sick of paying for ADSL2+ and getting sub-ADSL1.

Will ring Orcon, but I don't think they'll just "lend" me one of theirs. If they did, I'd be very surprised.

The Helpdesk should do. They might charge you for shipping or something, but I have seen them send out "loaners".

Its worth a try. I would be very interested in the results.

I have the same netgear at home. Its a pretty good modem. Rock solid for me.

However my girlfriend has one and its not that flash. I think it got spiked in a lightning storm as the ethernet ports don't work anymore.

School Holidays

They end in 1.5 weeks I wonder if the TAB will put some odds on better Intertubes performance once school is back?

yeah, like i said, its been fantastic up till 4-5 days ago.

Will ring and ask, it sounds hopeful that they will actually lend it then.

Will post back results, depending on what happens.

Cheers.

Yeah.. but by telling them to get stuffed, did you resolve the issue?

While I want to agree with you - YouTube has sucked for week, weeks prior to the school holidays.

like Sounddude said, there is still a lot of backhaul where I am, and that should mean I get at least SOME good internet (I would think) but instead, i'm not.

load up an ubntu live cd and and test again... I've seen people tweak their windows network setting to the point that its worse than standard.

as for the youtube caching, I wonder what boxs they are using. Peerapps? BlueCoats, Squid?  or some special YouTube Cache?

I've done tests on Mac OS and Windows. Mac being my primary OS.

I don't particually fancy downloading a 700MB ISO file on this crappy speed.
Thanks anyway.
