I've had problems with speed recently with Orcon. While I was on the phone to one of the CSR's today, and he said that 6mb to CHCH is a good speed?!?

Am i being too demanding to be expecting more than ADSL1 speeds? or is the CSR daft?

I said to him it seems stupid me paying for ADSL2+ if i'm only receiving ADSL1 speeds, I mean, I was getting these speeds to CHCH on ADSL1 when I was with Telecom.

As discussed many times, there is something wrong with your setup.

You should be able to get your sync rate to a national site

Have you tried a new modem yet? What have you done on your side to investigate?

Even though i know its not going to fix the problem, i will try it anyway.

im now getting 14mb in Auckland, which is just about what i was normally getting.

anywhere outside auckland - no way.

the guy I spoke with today was busy saying that its normal to get that speed and that it was really good. clearly its not by your response.

depends on the national site

If its connected via Peering exchanges (APE/WIX) then you should get your sync speed.

The Auckland speedtest.net (the World Exchange one) one is connected via APE (Auckland Peering exchange)

Is the site you're experiencing 'slow speeds' on capable of delivering to you any faster?  perhaps you can get someone else to test to the same destination?

That's funny. Everything is now going at about 13mb(down) up and down the country and to Sydney.

There clearly isn't anything wrong with my setup at all. Nothing has changed here, over the whole time I've been having this issue.

I guess I just saved $10 that would have been wasted getting a not-needed modem from Orcon.

To further that, the CSR's clearly arent trained very well, giving the customer the wrong information like that, and he was fairly adement that HE was right, and that it was my setup that was causing the issue.
Even though it was a minor detail - If I didn't know any better, and that I am capable of getting higher speeds, I would have given up and not pushed any further for the issue to be resolved.

I apologise is that sounds snarky, but it's not the first time I've had this issue.

Anyways, I'll monitor over the next couple of days to make sure it doesn't get screwed up again.

It?s a filter issue, it?s a modem issue, it?s a router issue, it?s a something else issue, bet bucks to BS it?s the ISP and their rateshaper issue.

Aaron I'm having similar issues as you mate. Here's the thread I posted about what I've got going on:

I just don't know if things will be fixed by changing ISP or whether I need to get someone to investigate it for me.

Very frustrating though, I know where you're coming from!

I get around 6Mbps to Christchurch also. It's pretty good speed already, considering I don't download much from chch. However...

The latency's perfectly fine, but the bandwidth is seriously lacking....

Tell you what; i'm nothing short of pissed that Orcon have said "we're not going to compensate you in any way for the issues you were having in regards to your fault you logged."

They say that broadband is not a promised service. And had this been International traffic, I could understand. But since I've been told by a couple of people at Orcon that my area has the capability of dealing with National traffic, and that I should be getting sync(or near sync speed), I would have expected a better response.

I think its rude that I was paying for ADSL2 and receiving ADSL1 speeds.

I sure as hell won't be referring anyone to Orcon anymore.
