Hi,

I have read a few posts about people complaining about Orcon's slow download speeds, and it seems to have become more of a complaint from about March 2009 to present.
My speed has halved. Not only on speedtest.net but also my attainable line speed.
I am on the adsl2+ network.
I am more than likely switching to XNet after trialing Orcon for 10 months and noticing it's rapid decline.

Has Orcon become too big for it's own good and no longer able to provide the download speeds of old?

What do you consider slow download? And when you say its halved has it gone from 18 mbps to 9mbps download local traffic

Hi,

Well just general browsing or especially youtube, I shouldn't be experiencing 10 second playing then 10 second caching then 10 second playing etc.
No my speed has dropped from 8mbps to 3.5mbps on a speedtest. My attainable line rate has dropped from 10mbps to 4.2mbps.

My attainable line rate has dropped from 10mbps to 4.2mbps.

Pretty much says it all really.

Please log a fault with the helpdesk so they can get to the bottom of such a big line speed decrease.

have you tried power cycling / rebooting the modem/router first if it still sucks then call orcon tech sup and log a complaint

Hi,

I have reported the issue with Orcon about 2-3 weeks ago and never heard back. I just reported the issue again so I'll give it a few days and if no reply I'll call them up.
Yes I have power cycled the router a few times with no improvement.

The interesting thing when I run a test at speedtest.net is that the test races up to 3.5Mbps and then stops and hovers around that point. I'm sure I remember from my tests earlier in the year that it would gradually get up to the 8Mbps mark and not race there and stop. I'm not saying it is capped but it looks like it when you watch the test.

Is it possible that my exchange has become full compared to 6 months ago when my speeds were double and attainable line rate was doubled and that is cauing the 50% drop ?

If you attaintable linerate had dropped, it has nothing to do with the orcon core network or overseas links. Youtube is fed locally from the Orcon datacenter.

Attainable linerates dropping generally means that there is a line fault, or a change in line quality. Have you tried an isolation test? Do you have your modem at the end of a long extension cord? Can you post your line stats from your modem?

Are you on the Orcon+ or Orcon network?

Thanks for your reply. I have not tried an isolation test yet, and my router is connected to the line via the normal 1m cable.
I am on the Orcon+ network.
Below are my routers DSL line stats.

With 38db Attenuation, you should be getting more than 4mbit line rate. This proves to me there is a line problem of some sort.

Try the line isolation test and report back. remember to reboot your modem after you have unplugged everything.

Ok. I unplugged the phone and removed any filters on the lines apart from the one the router is plugged in to. I then removed the filter all together. I then plugged the router in to the only other jack point in the house through the filter (I have 3 filters total but 2 are spares).
The router was powered off for 1 minute after each test and then powered back on.
The results were no different no matter what test I ran. All were around the 4000Kbps - 4100Kbps mark and the attainable did not change much either.

Check if your address is now connected to a cabinet, pay attention to what is says in the on the right hand side under "Cabinet Details"

Hi, yes my address has had a cabinet installed and from what I read on the orcon site it would seem that I am a victim of cabinetisation (made that word up) having adverse effects. They say I might be able to request to be put back on to their unbundled network so I might talk to someone tomorrow and see how far I get with this issue.

This was under the cabinet details heading:
Cabinet Name: RUE/BN
Upgrade Scheduled: Jun 2009

Coincidence that it probably was about June/July I started to notice a decrease in line speed.

Log a fault with the helpdesk, ask to be moved to an Orcon account (off Orcon+). Mention that your line rate has dropped dramatically due to be being moved to cabinet.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi, I have just emailed my works Orcon account manager with my problem. Cutting corners yes but at least I'll get my request actioned or sent to someone who can help without battling the helpdesk.
