I plan to subscribe to one of Orcon's naked ADSL2+ plans. Orcon can rent a Dynalink RTA1320 modem. But it seems some people were claiming that there are some overheating problems with the modem. I don't plan to rent the modem from Orcon. Instead, I want to buy one. If I buy RTA1320, I'm worried about whether it is indeed getting too hot. If I don't buy RTA1320, I'm not sure whether the modem I buy works well with Orcon's plan. I read some posts claiming some modems do not work well with some ISPs.

Should I buy the RTA 1320? Or anyone can recommend one that works well with Orcon's naked ADSL2+? I don't like wireless modems and I just need one R45 port. Price range within 100 to 300 NZD is OK.

Thanks. Cool

Many ISP's used to give out RTA1320's as the free modem for new customers, you can normally get a 2nd hand as new never used one off trademe for $20-30 so I wouldn't bother renting one.

They have a pretty solid broadcom chipset that works well on Telecom wholesale hardware and Orcon or Vodafone hardware in the exchanges/cabinets.

However... RTA1320's are known to have a short lifetime often ~1-2 years before they seem to start acting weird, many people have suggested it's due to overheating (poor case design lack of heatsinks etc).

There are two other options that I know of that use the same chipset but do not seem to have the overheating and crapping out after 1+ years problem.

TP-Link TD-8840

You can either for ~$60-70

I personally think the TP Link looks less ugly than the DSE.

Orcon used to give out a Siemens ADSL Wifi modem once. I have one here that I got when I went LLU

Don't get a Dynalink 1320. Mine's fluffed out after just under a year. It won't get an IP now at all. Threw it into the bin.

The broadcom chipsets mean that it will synch at a higher speed than those modems without. When running okay, my downstream synched at 22 Mb/s. I dusted off my 2+ year old D-Link DSL-502T and it synchs at 17 Mb/s.
