Telecom have been working on the cabinet at top of the road for the last week,  im with Orcon and was getting download speeds of 5mbits, now im getting close to 8mbits, im using an adsl 2+ modem, however my neighbour is with xtra and is getting 14mbits, any reason for this?  I know 100% its not my modem :) so why im i getting a lower speed than my neighbour? im on an orcon full speed plan, so doesnt that mean as fast as my line will allow? shouldnt i be getting the same speed as my neighbour?

Where in NZ are you located? Are you on an Orcon + ULL network?

While you may be quick to discount your modem there are plenty of variables that could account for speed, house wiring being the main factor.

In very basic terms, for companies like Orcon cabinets are road blocks that generally negatively impact their unbundled service and will do until they can sub-loop unbundle the cabinet.

on the Henderson exchange in west auckland, couldnt get orcon+ when i last checked earlier this year, so on the normal one. we also had broadband installed back in 2001, went on the telecom jetstart and they sent out a tech to install a central splitter, we have a phone jack comming in especially for our broadband labelled "jet stream" and we plug the modem in without a line filter. all other phone devices dont have filters either. i just had a thought, maybe its my splitter causing the low speed compared with my neighbour? my neighbour also uses filters not a central splitter.

You got a decent modem? Not one of the dlinks that tops out at 8 or so? Modem not locked onto an adsl1 mode as troubleshooting in the past?

Make and model of the modem is required

Make sure its not stuck on ADSL1 mode and that you have a Max/Max account, with 128K upload speeds should be around ADSL1 rates.

Max/Max will unlock ADSL2 speeds.

Im using a TP-Link adsl2+ modem, model TD-8840, have recently updated firmware too. Im also on a max/max plan

I fix stuff!

It's unlikely to be the modem at fault it's a solid broadcom chipset. You could always try your modem at your neighbours to verify 100% that it is not the issue.

So that kind of leaves house wiring, phone line, cabinet port and adsl profile settings as the possible suspects..

I would suggest contacting Orcon after testing the modem at your friends house.

Please post the ATTN, SRN and line rates. Is the upload speed greater than 128k as the profile may be incorect at telecoms end even though you are getting billed for max/max

ok have just been out for a bit upto the shop and come back to find my broadband wasnt working, checked line speed and its at 14922kbps down and 956kbps up according to my router, did a speed test at www.consumerspeedtest.org.nz when broadband came back on (ppp wanst connecting, only getting adsl sync), and im getting 7.30mbps down and 0.81mbps up according to that test. Here are my current ATTN and SRN line rates, ATTN 12.5 down and 5.7 up, SRN 10.1 down and 13.6 up, they keep fluctuating a bit by + or - 1

Sounds like they are still in a process of commissioning the cabinet perhaps

That's normal for an Orcon connection on a Telecom cabinet. I'm on a Telecom cabinet attached to the Ponsonby Exchange here and get only 5mbits throughput despite a line speed of 14mbits to the cabinet. Would transfer to Telecom except flatmate prefers Orcon due to their no contracts policy. :(

Ahh, so your sync rate is just on 15Mb/s with 12.5dB attenuation, then that sounds ok, so if you are getting speeds test results of around 7Mb/s then its an ISP issue or that speedtest server is no good.

Have you tried www.speedtest.net check the speeds to the Auckland and Napier servers, forget the Wellington one.

Edit: James you should have been more clear, there is a distinct difference between sync rate and end to end throughput. I suspect you are talking about the latter, however only the former relates to the OP's issue.
