Hi everyone, hope this is the correct place to put this. Have seen several other topics that seem similar but none quite so bad.! great froum btw ! =)

A little background. I recently moved into a new house(my brothers house). When i moved in there was already a telecom lanline/broadband plan at the address.
It was always pretty slow and would loose connection frequently -but it wasent my connection (it was a flatmates who was leaving) so it didnt bother me to much and i just put up with it and figured id move to a better ISP (orcon hopefully) when able to.

While i was with telecom and we had a home phone (lanline) it was always VERY crackly and noisey, the phone was basically unuseable. ( i never did try another phone, and instead just unplugged it as i never used it anyway, and figured it was a dodgy phone) SILLY ME!  (I did have line filters installed)

so now fast forward a month and im signed up to Orcons purple + full speed/full speed naked adsl2+ plan.
I get the new connection up and running, and its still having problems, dropping/disconnecting frequently and slow speeds. I do some googling and start researching spliiters etc thinking perhaps the other phone jacks in my house were causing excess "noise" or perhaps bad/old wiring. Nothing else was plugged into any phone jack. no alarm, no sky, no phones, no fax, nothing.

Still no joy after checking all phone jacks to make sure nothings plugged in.
Next step i get an electrition to disconnect all other phonejacks throughout the house and install a CAT5E mega cable straight from the incoming point on the house straight to a new RJ45 wall socket.
My internet is still sloowwww!

Next step i think it must be my modem, so i call orcon and request that they send me one of their "orcon home hubs" This arrived a few days later.
Still very slow but at least seems stable now and dosent drop me continually.
So this is as far as iv got...im getting a bit worried, pretty much 100% sure now thats its not a fault of mine and is related to something not on my premesis which has me worried.
What should i do!?

Ring your ISP and tell them you have a line fault, that you can hear crackling/noise on the land line and the ADSL keeps dropping out.

The should be able to perform a test on the line and will most likely book a tech to come out and check the line from the exchange to the house.

Just this minute had a call from orcon, they want to send out a technition either today or tommorow to try fix the problem.
10 points to Orcon! (i had called them yesterday regarding my slow speeds and they had sent me a "slow speed troubleshooting form", i was in the process of filling it out - havent returned it yet, and iv already had a call saying they want to send out a tech!)
Excellent "pro-active" customer service, very happy with that.
I will report back with how i get on.

Hmmm, it shouldn't be that high, my parents are about 5km away and theirs is in the low 40s.  I'd suspect either a faulty filter, bad phone or dodgy wiring.  Let us know how you get on with the tech  :)

ok things are looking up!
had the tech out on wed who determinted that the fault was infact in the neighbours roof. (our line runs through the neighbours roof before it gets to us, there are 2 "units" i spose youd say)
my brother the electricion had previously run a cat5 cable from where the line entered OUR house, deleting all the phone jacks etc - but the problem was even further back in the neighbours roof.
So long story short, we ran a new cat6 cable through the neighbours roof and straight to the modem.
Speed has increased from about 480kbps to 5.3mbps. Off the top of my head line attenuation has decreased from 67.5 to 54.
So yea, so far things are looking up! would still like to squeeze a bit more speed out of it if possible.
Will post new line stats later when i get home.
Is 54 line attenuation still a little high?

You should be getting better than that.

The next question is whether you're cabinetised or not, if you are you're probably suffering from midpoint injection issues. The Orcon+ network ADSL signal comes from exchange and goes via a cabinet to your house. Telecom house their broadband equipment in their cabinets, other ISP's choose not to.

Put your address into the coverage map http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

If it tells you that you are on a cabinet you best bet for better results is to move away from Orcon+ back to a Telecom wholesale plan.

Hi, most of the cabinets off HCK are not due for installation till the end of the year. If you click on show cabinets in Exchange area do you infact reside in a future cabineted area or not.

If you are in the direct exchange area (once the future cabinets are installed) then that would indicate that you cable length should be less than 2km in which case you should get significantly higher speeds now.

ok had another look, it would seem i am in the howick exchange but am due to have a cabinet upgrade in dec 2010? i think its HCK/BT cabinet?

it said "This address is scheduled to be connected to a roadside cabinet using faster broadband equipment (ADSL2+ technology) by Dec 2010."

what does this mean for me? cheers

Hi, its all good news, come the end of the year and you should be having speeds in the 15-18Mb/s range, few more sleeps yet though.

ahh awesome, thats good news! :)

i will stick with orcon, they have been very good in getting techs to have a look at the problem and also follow up service (call just to see if my internet is any better etc)
