KiwiSurfer: *snip*

Flatmates going with Orcon after all simply due to their prices and no term contracts. Fun.

how is orcon's the cheapest? it is however the only one offering no term contracts, same can't be said for any other isps.

but anyway, you know it's a bad sign when I start to comment here..

For naked DSL on a non-cabinetinised line their prices aren't too bad. Probaly not the cheapest I'll admit but then they aren't much more expensive either. Plus the no-term contracts is a nice bait.

I've been with Orcon for years and I've seen them go steadily downhill.  Take speedtest.net results.  They've halved since my first results in 2007. From slightly over 4 to slightly over 2 Mb when talking the States.

Though today seems to be especially bad.  A speedtest result to San Francisco showed 0.16Mb down and 0.12Mb up.

I'm trying to get an Ubuntu iso from city link in Wellington and it is pretty dire...

Ironically the router shows the line has never been better.  It's an old Cisco with an ADSL1 card...

Is it Orcon or is it just Internet in New Zealand in general?

3rd night in a row I have tried to view some eBay listings.
3rd night in a row I get Internet Connection Problems on every single eBay item I want to look at.

This is getting beyond a joke.

Orcon .. I want some information on when you are actually going to solve the issues that the thread is happening. I refuse to do anymore ping and connection isolation tests.

The problem is NZ's connection to the outside world.

We have Southern Cross Cables, which is owned 50% by Telecom. The Telecom Wholesale board sits a man who also sits on SCC's board :P

They've invested earlier than everyone else, and are reaping their reward right now...

I disagree.  It's easy to blame "them" but it's obvious (to me anyway) that Orcon is suffering somewhere and is not being too open about it.  I too will never log a call only to do an isolation test etc again as the times I have done them nothing is different nor changed at my side of the equation. Yet the process remains, and what a time waster it is.

I must admit, the last few weeks have seen my connection improve for gaming, but it's NOWHERE NEAR as good as it was only a month or two ago.  Youtube still sits there buffering beyond belief sometimes but meh.

I'm just quietly sitting here biding my time, awaiting at least some form of realistic 'stopscrewingmearound' update from someone, somewhere.  It seems though this may be a waste of time also.

Carry on.

I agree that orcon's not being too open about some things.

Such as how does a customer's line gets degraded performance when it's getting cabinetised.

Pre cabinetised line goes from client's premise to an exchange which is far away.
After, the line presumably either runs THROUGH telecom's cabinet THEN goes to the old exchange, OR isn't affected and still only goes to the old exchange.

In the first case, a performance degradation is expected, however wouldn't Orcon have the rights to sue telecom for damages in doing so? I don't understand how lines can be so obviously "slowed" with no one being responsible, and thus no repercussion for their action.

That's what happened to me at the start of the year. I got cabinetised and they knocked me from ADSL2 to ADSL1, so now they give me a $30 credit on my bill every month as a result. The speeds did increase after the cabinetisation however, and I now get double the speeds that I used to, although I can only imagine the speeds I'd be getting if I was still on ADSL2 after the cabinetisation occured. I asked why I couldn't remain on ADSL2 and they said that their equipment wasn't in the new cabinets so ADSL1 is the only option...

My speed initially was around 10Mbps, afterwards it dropped to 2Mbps without any explanation what so ever.  Now with cabinet just down the road I'm connecting at 20Mbps, so surely a speed increase.

I have to say the speed drop was rather suspicious, as it provided a perfect incentive for a rational being to move over to Telecom Wholesale.

Surely no one would complain about it, but it really makes you wonder about orcon's business model.. which as far as I can tell consists of dumping money at telecom.

10.30 - again
Tried to look some images from a convention on China via 4chan and a Chinese forum - no pictures would load. You Tube wouldn't load ...

Yet 30 minutes ago I was downloading updates on my iPod Touch using iTunes. Took about 10 minutes to download 200MB which while it isn't good, isn't crap either

Just what the hell is going on.

I'm experiencing the worst international connectivity I have ever had with Orcon at the moment - is anyone else having the same? NZ websites & email are fine - but gmail/hotmail and any international sites (facebook, speedtest.net etc.) are virtually unreachable???

I seem to be okay at the moment. Certainly pages are slower to load than normal, but not excessive. Speed Test ran for me and is showing 8.25Mbps to LA.
