Perhaps a silly question, but how do I post those speedtest results as pics here, I can't edit my post, I guess theres a limit to the amount of times you can try.

Hi Sounddude,

Thanks again for engaging on the forums to try and troubleshoot performance issues. You can help a lot of people at once this way, and I prefer it :)

Anyway, last night after you asked for some speedtest stats I decided to collect some data for you today. I only saw later that you also needed traceroutes, so I only have them starting at 5pm sorry (but they match the times of the speedtests). Hope it helps.

If those stats were at all helpful, I could try again on Sunday night when I would normally try to do a Skype call to Australia. Last few weeks it has been super shonky (not just video, but audio too), so we just end up on text chat.

Hi Rambaldi. When you post do you see editor buttons (e.g. bold, itaics, smilies etc..) above where you type?

If so, try using the Insert/Edit Image option (square button, with a tree icon). Add the URL of your speedtest image in there.

If not, you may need to enable it. I turn it off so reply posting will work correctly from my milestone (otherwise it won't let me type in the reply box at all for some reason). Here's how you do it:

1) Go to your profile options (next to your avatar at the top of the forums)
2) Scroll down to the Edit My Profile option (below your geekzone friends, not far below your avatar)
3) On the next page scroll down to the Forum and Geekzone Blog Options section
4) Check the box for "Use HTML editor when posting in forums of Geekzone Blog"

Hope that helps. Good luck!

My yahoo tracerts are still insane (but thankfully more in looking at the crazy number of hops than any real ping issues). The second hop is bolded as now we're outside of prime time it's solid, but a couple of tracerts I sent to Simon in a PM earlier had this hop at ~80ms (as with alliao's recent post), and it's been that way all night (from 5pm until a few minutes ago).

Orcon is sending our data packets via the Large Hadron Collider so they get accelerated beyond the speed of light. Einstein be damned!

alliao: Wow, wonder if orcon's working tirelessly?

Sleep? Who needs sleep!

Thanks for the info guys

We added 200Mbit of bandwidth last night to our Aussie POP in Sydney, this should help with some of the issues.

HOWEVER.

We still have issues with our Telecom Wholesale handovers. As you can see most of you had 60.234.8.199 in your traceroutes. This is one of our BRAS's. That handover to telecom is overloaded.

We are working with Telecom to resolve.

Customers on Orcon+ should be running sweet!

Hope it gets fixed soon, as gaming is *extremely* frustrating on some nights, damn near unplayable :(

Hi there,

I found these forums after having same really slow interent over the last 36 hours and searching online.  Unlike others, my connection has been consistently slow and has not fluxuated much with time of day.

Here is a cut and past from out modem :

Internet

Connection status:     Connected (0:12:24:08)
Connection mode:    Always on
IP address:    60.234.208.128
MAC address:     00:21:04:4C:A3:8F
Default gateway:    60.234.8.199
Preferred DNS server:    60.234.1.1
Alternate DNS server:    60.234.2.2
Downstream rate:    4608 kbps
Upstream rate:    160 kbps
PPPoE pass-through:     Disabled
ADSL Line

Status:    Cable connected
Line mode:    G.DMT
Maximum line rate:    4608 kbps (downstream) / 800 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin:    12.6 dB (downstream) / 29 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation:    25.4 dB (downstream) / 11.5 dB (upstream)
Output power:    17.5 dBm (downstream) / 12.1 dBm (upstream)

And here is the stats from speedtest.net:

https://www.speedtest.net/result/828245112.png

I've tried restarting the modem a few times and I have submitted a support ticket on orcon's website.

I'm located in Hokitika and I'm on the Orcon Home Platinum Plan

Thanks

Tim

Get the helpdesk to have a look at your line. With a line attenuation of 25db you shuold get better than 4Mbit even on an old ADSL1 exchange/coklin.

I would also ask for interleaving to be turned on, especially if you have a bad line.

Orcon's really slow at the moment, it's almost like being on dialup. I'm on a BSY cabinet on telecom wholesale

Usually get 20Mbit/s down, 1Mbit/s up

Network status page has been updated

Over the past week we have become aware of a congestion issue with one of our handover links on our broadband network. These links pass the broadband traffic between our suppliers network and our own. The result of this is that approximately quarter of our customers may be experiencing lower than usual broadband performance during peak times.

This has particularly become an issue this week as our customers had their data allowance reset after billing on the 23rd of May, which means that they begin using a lot of data again.

We are aware of how frustrating this can be, and want to assure you that we are taking this issue very seriously. We have been working really hard to come up with a solution, and have implemented a couple of temporary measures to improve performance. However we are still working on a long term solution. As soon as we have this solution we will be implementing it without delay. Please accept our apologies for this issue. We will update you as soon as we have a solution and a confirmed date for implementation.

EDIT: My own performance seems to be a bit better than previous days
My default gateway does not seem to be the one that has been identified as being corrupt, though it is close: 60.234.8.200

glad to say that right now everything looks sweet :)

1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
2 21 ms 25 ms 31 ms 60.234.8.199
3 22 ms 14 ms 16 ms ge-0-0-3-201.cre1.nct.orcon.net.nz [121.98.9.65]

even the BRA (srsly?) is looking fine without the nasty 80ms near-dialup-latency :)

Thanks!

Ragnor: NZ ISP actually posting a real status update on their website

Always good when the opperations team gets to create the status update, as opposed to marketing or customer service putting some sort of missinformed spin on the situation.

Good on them for a real update!

I'm sure everyone is thinking how did they not see this comming but the truth is that relatively small changes in user habits can make a large difference to the amount of traffic used making any previous forecast near useless.
Or when marketing dictates that more data should be given away for free without doing the maths.
This is often followed by members of the opperations team pointing fingers at said marketing people and saying things like 'i told you so'. and 'lol now look'
