any ideas?
for about a year i was getting close to 1000 kb/s now im sitting just under 300 kb/s every single time..
no changes at my end that i can remember..do you think they have started limitinbg everyone recently.
this is for downloading everything including rapidshare, torrents, microsoft updates etc..

maybe its just a setting at my end that i can tweak to get it back up to the 1000 mark??

Hi, thats a speed test, what does the modem stats page have to say, you need to login to the modem and check the DSL status

Cyril

Edit, also are you on an Orcon+ plan or Telecom wholesale plan (Orcon via Telecom hardware) and if the latter has your area been recently cabinetised, check www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps to find out

Point your favorite web browser to the IP address of your router, if Orcon supplied 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2 , enter admin and the password. It sounds like you have never logged into it so you may have to call Orcon to find out what default one is..

Hi, as old3eyes says. As you are on Orcon+ then it is also important that you check on the Telecomwholesale sight as linked above to check if your area has been cabinetised recently (since this speed drop occured) if so you most move back to a wholesale plan.

Please put your address into the following link

www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

There is 50 page thread on it here. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=59344

I am vointing for them in the " Slowest ISP in New Zealand Award "

Internatinal sites are having real issues. A few people think that Orcon is way over subscribed for international bandwidth .

Seems true to me.

Welcome to Orcon where we'd rather spend ridiculous amounts of the money you pay us on Stupid ads for more customers on our already over subscribed lines, rather than on the Important things like purchasing more international bandwidth so that everybody has an real great experience online at anytime of day.... So once again we'd like to welcome you to Orcon the slowest ISP in NZ

So are people on the Orcon+ network having the same issues because it still just sounds like handover link congestion on Orcon non plus (Telecom wholesale connections) to me.

This may be speculation on my part but I don't think much can be done about that other than:

- Attract more mom and pop low user customers to balance out heavy users
- Negotiate with their Telecom wholesale service delivery manager for higher than standard per subscriber rates for handover maybe?
- Move more people to EUBA plans (would that make any difference on handover links?)

They are probably already doing/working on all of the above already.

Anyway there's no term contract you can always leave if they aren't improving performance fast enough for you and come back later when they sort it (however long it takes).
