i've read the forums and still can't decide if to take the orcon plunge and leave xtra (again).

sounds like some folk have good speeds and reliablity, some don't. some love the service, some hate it. maybe it varies by area or exchange? before i take on a fixed term contract can anyone comment specifically on orcon+ mt eden exchange. and would you sign up again?

thanks

mike

why do you want to leave xtra? are you having performance issues, or is it a cost thing? (genuine question, not trolling :)

considering leaving xtra mainly as phone+adsl2 would currently be a third cheaper on orcon+ and also offer 30G data rather than the 20G of my current (adventure?) plan. xtra has been surprisingly ok (compared with the olden days) but is occasionally slow and i just hit the data cap and on this plan can't buy extra for the rest of the month. really annoying.
having said that i don't want a worse sevice (especially speed) and would pay a few extra $$ for a better one. hence wanting feedback on orcon+. another option is switch to a 40G xtra plan (total home somehing) but i think that also has a contract.
so.. any mt eden orcon reports? or better mt eden exchange options?

thanks

I'd recommend double checking with Telecom on that, as I recall they don't enforce a new contract when switching between the separate phone (i.e. the old Anytime plans) + separate broadband to the Total Home Packages as it's just a plan change.  It's only new broadband customers that iirc get put on a 12 month contract.

I fix stuff!

Hi MCB, Since you are in the Orcon+ Area, you should get pretty good performance, as there are no telecom wholesale restrictions in backhaul etc.

Telecom Total Home Broadband (Land line + ADSL) 40GB is $105 ($2/GB for more data or cap on limit)

The Orcon+ main pricing on their website sucks but they have these promo's:

www.orcon.net.nz/bestdealever
Select the data addon and you end up with $85 for Phone and ADSL at 40GB

www.orcon.net.nz/partners

Select the data addon and you end up with $70 for Phone and ADSL at 40GB

Note: I have no idea if those promo's are still active (they're still on the website!)

Hmm $35 saving over Total Home Broadband 40GB I'd probably give it a go.

yeah the orcon+ promos are still active here, hence the temptation.
nigelj - you're right - the 12 month xtra contract is not when shifting plans. for now i've done that to solve the immediate problem and back up to 10mbps downloads this morning. we're about 1.3kms from the exchange.

still after reports on the ocron+ experience in mt eden  - anyone using this?

thanks

with the orcon platinum 30gb plan you get national calling and free calling to a country of your choice. with the telecom plan you only get local calling.  that could add up to significant saving for some people...
