I  have signed up for Orcon's new Genius service. Phone has arrived and I am just waiting for the cut over. The Genius would appear to be the Australia BOB2 and when I asked Orcon for extra handsets they dont have any.
Anyone with experience with this sort of device that could recommend suitable handsets available locally that wil work with Wifi VOIP.
Thanks

AFAIK any handset can be plugged into the jack on the side and should be fine.

YEs but if you want to take full advantage then you need to use the wifi features so you can have extra handsets in other rooms. The handbook is obviously written for lay people so it only explains basic setup. You get one handset with package whcih is already configured so I guess they have a fixed ip for that one. I now want extra wifi handsets that will work with the Genius

The handsets don't use wireless, they use the DECT standard. Most DECT phones should be able to hook up with the unit.

I will dig out the exact standard when I am back at my desk tomorrow.

OK I understand but wonder how it handles aditional handsets do they automatically configure themselves to match the base unit or what?

On dect handset, there is an option to Join base station. Choose that. It will ask for a PIN. I belive the PIN is a menu item on the Genius web interface.

I will double check tomorrow, on the exact instructions. We have tested it with a number of handsets, and works well.

You should just need a GAP compliant handset. Any decent DECT handset will do this - the only notable exception would be Uniden, virtually every handset they make doesn't support GAP.

Courtesy of our product guy :-) This is the doc to re-pair the genius handset. It will be simular for other handsets. Our call center doesn't support other vendor handsets.

On the Genius Handset

With the batteries in place, your additional Orcon GENIUS handset screen will begin flashing ?Please register?.
Follow these steps:

? Press on the right side of the control key (it?s the one that looks like a square) to display the main menu.
? Scroll down, using the control key, to ?Settings? and press OK using the display key to the bottom right of the screen.
? Now with the ?Settings? sub menu open, scroll down and select ?Handset? and press OK.
? Scroll down again until you hit ?Register H/Set? and press OK.
? Enter the system PIN number (the default is 0000) and press OK.
? You should see a message on the screen that says ?Regstr.Procedure Base 1?. This indicates that the registration procedure has started.

On the Orcon GENIUS modem

? Within 60 seconds of completing the above, press and hold the button on the back of GENIUS that?s labelled ?add extra
hs/set? for about three seconds.
? Following successful registration, the internal number of the handset is displayed, for example ? Base 1.
? If the registration was unsuccessful, repeat the process.

Thanks much appreciated. I received all the hardware yesterday just waiting for the cutover and I can get going. incidentally the pacakage did not have any booklet for the handset so I would have been a bit stuck for pairing the handset if it is needed.
Its a pity that Orcon did not bring in some additional handset units for those that need more than one phone, as I now have to go out and source some extra handsets. I note that Panasonic have a deal on for a set of three handsets I will have a look at them

Cheers

Handset is already setup out of the box - or at least didnt see mine going through anything to connect to the base. I currently get dialtone on my handset but when trying to palce calls, get a mesasge along lines of "cannot be placed at this time"...official switchover isnt for a few more days yet.

That's good to know. I need more than just the one handset so the pairing info will be handy. I am surprised they did not take the opportunity to sell individual handsets as most people have phones in every room these days

I'm wondering this too. We have 5 phones around the house now used daily, 4 of those are cordless. It is impractical to have the main bases plugged into the modem due to the location and use of the phones.

If we consider going to Genius VoIP well I need to a way to make the handsets work. It may very well be a case of buying a couple of new DECT handsets. Sigh.

I just purchased a set of three Panasonic DECT-GAP handsets from Dick Smith They were model KX-TG1313 and cost ^9.00 dollars for the three. They each come complete with a charger unit and at that price ($20.00 per unit) seem a good deal I have one handset with the Genius plus these three so that should see me set. I dont expect there will be any problem pairing then with the Genius base station and from memory I think you can pair 8 units.
All I need now is the switch over and I can start testing these things

I have paired my 2 existing Panasonic DECT hand sets to the Genius no problems.  Default pairing PIN was 0000.

I did have the base unit of the Panasonic plugged into the Genius but now that I have paired them to the Genius I no longer need the base station plugged in, which has freed the phone port up for my MySky decoder.

Sweat!
