I'm considering switching to Genius from TelstraClear DSL. Just wondering about the monthly fee cost differences relating to 'modem rental' (and I can't find the details in the Orcon Ts&Cs or Genius FAQ).

With the default offer (30GB + Lite modem + 18mth term) - monthly fee is $70
With the same but 12mth term the monthly fee is $75.

My question - if I took the 12mth term, does that mean I'll pay $75 indefinitely or will the monthly fee drop down to $70 after 12 months?

if it dropped after 12 months, then it wouldn't be a rental, it would just be deferred payment over a 12 month period, so my guess is that the answer will be: no, the monthly fee does not drop by $5 after the 12 month period.

If anything, it could be that the opposite happens.  i.e. if you take the 18 month contract for free rental, the free rental only applies for the 18 months. After that period you may then have to start paying $5month unless you resign a contract. the Ts and Cs aren't clear on whether the free rental is indefinite or just for the period of the contract.

Also note that even if the rental is free, it is still always a 'rental'.  With most ISPs you own the modem but with Orcon you do not.
This has it's positives and negatives. On one hand it means they should always support it even when it would otherwise be out of warranty.  (i.e. most ISPs would not give you a free modem if your 5 year old one broke, but with the genius they should).
On the other hand if you change ISPs or otherwise leave Orcon you always have to send the genius back to Orcon or incur a $250 charge (even if you were getting free rental)
