I reckon I have give up complaining, getting really tired to call, email, posting the reply that I still have the problem when it looks like a never ending problem. So my bf and I are just annoying each other at home cos of the constant disconnect. Not sure what else can I do, wait for the contract to finish (a long wait) and switch to different ISP.

If your internal house wiring is at fault changing ISP's won't solve the issue.

When did these issues start and are you on a Orcon ULL connection or Telecom Wholesale?

Are you covered by a Chorus cabinet or fed from the exchange? You can tell by visitng www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps


There does exist a reasonably probability you are on a Orcon ULL connection, and have since been cabinetised which will cause no end of problems. If this is the issue the solution is for Orcon to move your connection across to Telecom Wholesale.

Was on Telecom prior to this, no issue. Just happened after we switched to Orcon.

The on-site support engineer came to check before, they didn't find any fault.

Sorry to jump in this thread but I have similar issues with my internet... Quite often at random times during the night, always around a near hour the modem will cut out and reset as said before. Will start happening at 12am and will randomly do it again during the early morning on the new hour...

Saw something about sync speeds and such so...
Line Rate 5618 Kbps 837 Kbps
Attainable Line Rate 7356 Kbps 841 Kbps
Noise Margin 11.9 dB 12.3 dB
Line Attenuation 9.5 dB 3.9 dB

Anything seem weird with that at all?

ISP: Actrix
router/modem: Netcomm NB6Plus4Wn

Yeah its still happening, Orcon did ring me up and say they could send a techie but they would charge a large sum by the hour and then probably install something by where the line enters the house that would cost about 2-300$ + hourly fee's. I can't afford that so basically just have been living with it, almost been a year now. learnt a lot a patients :)

I was just wondering what is it they would install and maybe I could get one and install it myself, perhaps second hand? I have already changed the router and it did nothing. Thing is some days it works perfectly and very fast, and its always around the same time the trouble starts so I don't see how a house wiring problem could be so predictable. Someone mentioned it could be wire's getting cold at night and shrinking? Also when it rains it gets bad, but my house doesn't get cold or leak... or is there a test to see the clearness of the lines?

Hi, they will be refering to a central or master filter and if required a new cable run from the filter to your modem (if current line to modem is not suitable).

Yes it is possible to do this yourself if you are of a practical nature and understand basic wiring technigues. If you are after a filter and kit of bits to do this them send me a PM.

I had a problem a bit like that a couple of years ago.
Drove me nutty.

It ended up being the modem/router - it had worked without fault for several years then just started doing random drop-outs/disconnects. I tried the ISP helpdesk a few times - it was always the turn it off/back on - which did always work for a while. Eventually it would die every night and needed a restart the next day.

Bought a new modem and the problem vanished.

Can you borrow/beg another unit off someone and try that?

EDIT:What make/model router do you have?

Random disconnections usually caused by a few simple things...

1.) Faulty CPE
2.) Faulty Internal Wiring (Phone jack's moist etc)
3.) Faulty at the ETP or RGL

Sometimes it can take more then one tech before this problem is fixed as it can be the result of more then one issue on the line, When a tech goes out and finds something not right they will fix it and stop looking for the fault.

Stick with it give them a call again if they aren't willing to help then move on... new ISP time.

Just got a new modem the other day, went from a speedstream 4600 to a netcomm nb6. Both are pretty basic, but the second one is brand new.

Yeah thing is its like the mechanic who wants to change your air filters every time you visit. I want to make sure its not my end so they don't see me as a cash cow.

There is a lot of detail you haven't given

What are your DSL sync stats?
Are you on a ULL connection or wholesale?
Are you connected to a cabinet or exchange?

OK so after reading your reply on 'exchange or cabinet' which I had no clue about, I came across this post http://www.geekzone.co.nz/sbiddle/7872 which seems to describe my situation. I dont know if im on the cabinet or exchange but my area is covered by both, adsl2+ not vdsl. I guess there was a lot more they were not telling me than 'its your fault'. The lines being drowned out is exactly how it seems because at times the line is working perfectly.

Wow, with stats like that you have enough reason to log a fault. I imagine if Chorus can fix what is causing your connection stats to be so bad then your disconnection issues will likely disappear too.
