Long time guest, first time user.

Hi all,

Have just bought my first home (yay) and am in need of some broadband action. Signed up with Orcon on the 24th of January to get the genius plan as we do not require a home phone. Requested that we needed it on by the 3rd of Febuary. Processed on the 25th and told that it would be connected on the 8th of February.. Called orcon to ask why there was such a delay and they said that it was because they needed to book a tech from chorus.
Fired up on the thought that I would not be able to distance myself further from the world and use Facebook, I called telecom and asked them when they would be able to have it running, jumped through the usual hoops and they came back and said tomorrow afternoon... Say what! When talking to the nice lady at telecom she said that orcon should have the same booking system as the, and therefore both have access to book the next available slot..
So do chorus give telecom new customers preference (which can't possibly be right) or do they prebook a certain amount of techs?
Anyone have any thoughts?

Seems strange that it takes orcon two weeks and telecom one day..

Are you connected to a cabinet or the exchange? You can check here
http://www.chorus.co.nz/sat

If you are connected to the exchange is it one Orcon have installed their own equipment in?

I was just thinking the delay could be due to Orcon having to coordinate with Chorus to connect you to Orcon equipment in the exchange.  I think that requires a Chorus tech and an Orcon tech to be there at the same time.

Maybe the terminology is incorrect, should be up to 21 days - can happen any time between now and then

Telecom and Chorus are separate companies now, when Chorus was owned by Telecom operational separation was in place so Telecom/Gen-i don't get preferential treatment

Chorus (and formerly Telecom Wholesale) have had rules in place that prevent preferential treatment and there are fairly big fines in place if those rules are breached.

There is a number of reasons why the provisioning could be delayed:
* The line might already be connected to Telecom POTS or Chorus broadband equipment which means it might be reconnected quicker (as they just need to turn on the port and provision it against the service provider) than say switching to LLU equipment which would require a tech to physically go out to wire it up.
* There may be a shortage of techs overall - pushing provisioning requests out.
* Orcon might have depleted their share of techs.

There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. :)

No point writing to a minister when their offices can take up to 21 days to be connected too

No preferential treatment for them either, though they like to think so

Young and naive, just expect everything to be done with the click of my fingers! Both companies stated that they had to get a Chorus tech to go to the exchange but one company can get them there quicker.. Thanks for replying so quick! geekzone is sweet!
