It just depends on whether any of these are things you want to do, and whether they are worth the extra cost to you. To me, they are.

All good points too.  Those are pretty incredible units too, especially as they are one of the few to allow recording from external sources these days.  Fully agree with your comments mate.

JimmyH: and the grief I have got from the GF about how hard it is to use the setup in my living room (which I, and many on GZ, would regard as simple and straightforward).

I personally think that is a valid point.  (Yeah I'm backing your girlfriend here, as dodge as that sounds.....)

I'm big on user interfaces and as such I'm big on the harmony type remote controls.  In my opinion no one should need to know how everything is connected, that's largely irrelevant.  If you know you want to play a CD or watch TIVO then in my house at least, you're armed with all the knowledge you need to work my system.

A bit of effort up front and you reap the rewards later, you know, happy wife = happy home and all...

I got a couple of Harmonies, but don't use them. Too ofter the button I wanted wasn't directly mapped and I had to hunt through the menus etc. Personally, I don't see what she was on about, I don't have a terribly complex setup...... it only needs the standard nine remotes that everyone else has to drive everything Tongue Out

Far out man, that's the bit of effort bit I was talking about Frown....

If the button you need is in a stupid place, then map it to a sensible place.
~either on a suitable physical button, or rearrange the menus so it's on hand easily and quickly.
If it's not on the remote, teach the remote that command.
If it's not on the activities you need it on, put it on them etc etc.

b0untypure1: ... It seems good because you can record 2 channels and watch a third...

Actually that's not quite true, you can record 2 channels and also watch something already recorded at the same time, but it it only has 2 tuners so not possible to do as you suggest.

Still a great and easy to use box though.

yea thanks discovered that :D still 2 is enough

And if it also has an ability to record from external AV sources, and the ad-skip that the Americans are allowed but we aren't then I might be interested. Four tuners isn't much better than two if we are limited to recording only Freeview, given the lack of actual content that's worth recording. I'm lucky if I can find one show in an evening that's worth watching on FV, let alone four at once!

I think you should have read the fine print - if it's the model I'm thinking of, it has 4 CABLE tuners but zero UHF Broadcast tuners.
Not much use here. :-(

b0untypure1:  I put on my happy face because the New Plymouth bond n bond is closed down and noel leeming is sadly the only place to go.

Noel Leeming and Bond and Bond are just different marketing channels of the same company.  Staff training, inventory, pricing, everything except the name above the door will be the same.

I think they had the two brands, so one brand could offer some brands exclusively. eg at one stage noelleemings didn't stock panasonic, but bond and bond did, and bond and bond didn't stock f&p.
