Running Freeview on DTVS-1B, frequently dropping out in the evening, currently dropped from around 6pm until now...

As this is not my house It seems the install was done by a 'mate' so I'm lead to believe they may have just not aligned the dish correctly?  There also seems to be three Arial cables running into the device including one leading to the old TV Arial input is this normal or a mistake?  

I have recommended that they seek a professional installer to fix issues, (tried turning off, unplugging, plugging back in, it was running a little hot so figure it could be that but no such luck)...

If there is some simple hints to fixing 'no signal' issues, that would be helpful, otherwise it's time to call in a professional.

We are located in Auckland, and no settings have been changed since install over a year ago,

I presume this is a Sat receiver?

What sort of dish do you have, and how old is it?

Pretty common fault is the older Sky dual throat LNBs failing due to old age. First thing they do is become sensitive to temperature at different times of the day...

Yeap Sat receiver

 

Sat shouldn't be too old as it's a 3-4 year old house, but it seems to be a cheaper style of house... I'm not keen to get on the roof as it's not my place so couldn't tell you model of the dish, so I think the best bet is just to call an installer and get it done properly, they're better off with DVB-T anyway I would imagine since there is HD service via that?

Ha, sun had been off the LNB for approx 10-15mins and now Freeview shows a signal...

Yep they're the ones that are failing. Next time it drops out try cool water from the hose and see if the signal comes back.

If it does, just need to grab a replacement lnb and holder.

Good indication of failing LNB.
Drifting way off frequency when it gets hot.

You would also need a new bracket, as most LNBs are a 40mm neck, whereas the old Sky one is smaller.

Or try for a second hand one from TradeMe... might fail again though...

Same thing happened tonight but for a shorter time, I would think due to it being maybe a bit cooler, thanks heaps for advice although I think I may convince them to replace with Freeview HD as we are well within range and it will be good when they upgrade to an HD TV.

Hi,

The DTVS-1B can be tuned to a drifting LNB. Ask them to call DTVS help desk 0800 388765 for assistance.

Given the drift is variable with temperature, rather than a constant drift of a few MHz, still likely to have problems at different times of the day.

It also doesn't address the root cause, which is probably the best fix.
