I think its great that we have free to air sport at all.

Even in SD it's a massive leap forward from what we have had.

I know, I was probably thinking more of those that have watched some form of the sport elsewhere rather than those sports not really been shown elsewhere such as AFL.

As an aside what is your opinion of the viability of a sports only channel using advertising as their source of income to purchase sports? No doubt they will have to have advertising logos on the screen as well as breaks for adverts. However with regards to football I imagine a lot of people who are watching the football will be watching after the fact so will remove adverts.

No idea really,  but I imagine these guys will have done their sums.  provided they get good traction and viewership I imagine they will be able to make money.

I'm hoping that if they use banner ads or similar that this means they wont be having endless interruptions within the games like in NFL.   At halftime or other natural intervals is fine, but the last thing you want is ads at a critical moment of a cricket match or F1 race and miss the action, which quite often happens on FTA tv at the moment with live sport.

It is an interesting one as a lot of their sport isn't in peak NZ times especially for advertising but then again it is a different type of channel.

I am wondering if the biggest issue they might have is that a lot of people use PVRs now and don't watch adverts. Coupled with that is that all the testing they have done is advert free so adding adverts maybe a shock to some but probably not.

I was under the impression there was going to be "internet-style" advertising - such as banner ads.

Can't PVR them away!

Anyone know why I can't get the test transmission on 114 anymore. All I get is the Christian channel (26)

NonprayingMantis: The only problem will be that they are one linear channel, with only 24 hours in any given day to actually show content.

Now, if they could develop some kind of 'on demand' service like Coliseum is doing so that game conflicts could be dealt with easily by just watching whichever one you wanted at any given time, that would be brilliant....

(hint hint Sommet - please do this)

Go to the Skyless EPL topic and all you'll read is a chorus of moans from people who think it's too much to have to figure out how to get streaming video working on their TVs.

To me this shows that it's just impossible to please everyone, and there's no point trying. I hope as startup businesses they just concentrate on keeping their heads above water instead of trying to service every request.

A lot of the AFL coverage looked like a low bitrate D1-CIF resolution stream that was then overscanned making the result unwatchable. Makes Sky's low bitrate delights look nice which isn't good. I won't be watching.

To not derail this thread too much, that was simply because we've swapped one monopoly for another but lost the easy ability to watch on a TV with the convenience of a high bit rate and remote, but now with the hassle of attaching more devices.  For example my boss is a big united fan but has no way of watching this on his tv as he has a desktop tv in one room and sky in another but no portable device.

Anyway back on topic, I do fear about free to air advert based tv.  The advent of the PVR has made it very hard for the advertisers to get their messages across and I do hope for the sake of free sports that this channel makes enough money... I'd love to see it grab F1 from Sky :-)

They say they have solved the image quality issue for AFL games. The picture looked very soft for a short while. The last game I saw looked pretty good for SD.

Our bitrate is high, the low quality was due to a problem with the encoder on the other end of our fibre in Australia.  This has now been fixed!

Viewers of sport like to watch the events live, therefore there will be less use of a PVR on this channel

The program that's on now must have encoder problems also. Looks like D1-CIF resolution at best to me. Certainly not broadcast quality. Kordia's bitrate output is over 3 Mbps but what you are feeding in is truly vulgar.

P.S. Looks like its being filtered some how to get rid of the visible blocking.

When did you last watch the channel?  We deleted all of the content that had this problem 2 days ago.
