I know could record it but don't need to and on the subject of recording the, the +1 channels give another chance at getting a show if you have a clash elsewhere with schedule's

Except that they are not in HD and not worth watching

While HD is great why does everyone get so put out about it when its not, It is after all just TV. Itrs still infinitly better to watch then the quality I used to have on the old analog system

One spends a lot of money on a decent HD TV to only have a hand full of channels that fully utilise it.

whole bunch of regional stations, occasionally viewed when travelling Wellington does not have one.   So much more could be done with the plus one space holders, they are just a terrible waste of spectrum just to stop competition picking them up.The same goes with the silly shopping channels.

Have to disagree about the +1 channels, I think they are great. Often watch the news at 7 after Tea. I know could record it but don't need to and on the subject of recording the, the +1 channels give another chance at getting a show if you have a clash elsewhere with schedule's

I would rather see the Plus 1 used for new channels and folks make use of time shifting to watch items that clash of similar. Right now they are a method used to hold onto spectrum space and block others from entering.

Ok, going to show my ignorance here. what do you mean by time shifting and how does it work?

I think FreeviewHD started broadcasting in NZ in 2007, I had it running from day one. Now 6 years on we still have to watch most TV channels in SD/DVD resolution. You would have hoped that there would have been some upgrades over time, I would have expected in 6 years you would have a few more channels in HD. Prime is missing my viewing as it looks ghastly on a 55" TV (mind you SkyHD looks ghastly on my brother in laws 50" tv).

I suppose I just hoped for frequent upgrades on the new system.

KiwiNZ: I don't necessarily agree with the privatisation of TVNZ I put it there as an option.

But the political destruction of public TV in NZ can be best summed up by the TVNZ 7 debacle. The Beehive, irrespective of who is in there cannot run public TV successfully. Maybe selling TVNZ to a third party, NOT Sky is a good thing.

The old Triangle TV renamed it's self as FACE TV "The face of public service TV" and then promptly sold their sole to Sky..  Public service broadcasting has no place on pay TV..

+1 channels are a waste of bandwidth with the proliferation of recorders these days..

Pausing live TV and also recording for later viewing.

Googled it, time shifting is just recording then watching later? Then the +1 channels are still needed, we often have multiple programs recording and some get recorded on the +1 channels to avoid conflict

the problem with new channels is that you have to fill them with programmes.  programmes cost money.  tv stations need advertising dollars to run FTA.  more programmes and channels means diluted advertising dollars.  diluted advertising dollars means either [1] we crap(pier) TV [2] the government has to shell out more cash or [3] FTA becomes paid.

i find that there is enough content on FTA TV for my family to watch - actually more than enough.  That it doesn't arrive here the same day in the US is a whole different argument and one that is slowly resolving itself, i think.

Looking forward to Al Jazeera, like watching Sommet sports, watch the occasional programme on ChoiceTV like coast but prefer to use the internet mainly to entertain me.

KiwiNZ: Oh and another thing, for the love Jiminy Cricket can we just get rid of all the reality TV and rubbish talent shows and Shortland Street.

What do the bright folks of GZ think should happen with TV services in NZ?

Believe it or not, NZ reality TV and Shortland Street are the most watched shows in NZ, according to ratings. Don't watch them myself, but don't think they'll be going away anytime soon.

Most channels on freeview are a waste of time and as no one watches them they can't afford any decent programming let alone modern HD programming.

Is part of the problem now that people want to watch TV when they want, how they want but don't want to pay for it?

Question about fast tracking. If it costs 50% more to purchase a programme to show hours after US and only increase viewership by 10% is that a very good commercial decision?

Plenty of people will also have <32" screens, possibly not even "HD", and the quality of FreeView +1 channels will be significantly better than the regular channels were on analog beforehand. Even my parents can get the benefit of catching up on the news after work on their Freeview'd 4:3 CRT screen.

I don't need the news to be in high-def, little is gained by it.

As for me, improve the broadband so that Netflix and/or Hulu consider NZ worthy of "official" attention.

not only that, but they are super cheap to produce compared to quality dramas (Sopranos, Lost, Game of Thrones etc).

Most watched + super cheap to make = very very high ROI for the TV channels.

I agree with wasabi2k. TV here is dead in the water (for me ever since they added watermark/logo on screen).
The alternatives are much more enjoyable viewing.  As for Freeview - crippled hardware and unreliable EPG recording
are just two of the negatives they've introduced.
