KiwiNZ: I don't see anything wrong with having channels that reflect our ethnic diversity in New Zealand

As long as the tax payer doesn't have to contribute to it.

Yes, let's get rid of all public funding of broadcasting - if it can't sustain itself, there's clearly no need for its existence.

Actually, while I suspect you are being sarcastic, I am more than half inclined to go along with that. When there are so many issues around poverty, education and healthcare etc that could potentially merit from more funding, why are millions of dollars in taxes being used to fund rubbish like NZ's Got Talent and the GC? I would happily see all that funding scrapped.

JimmyH: I'm always amazed that there are enough people who purchase off shopping channels to support one full-time shopping channel, let alone more than one.

Apparently one of them closed down last week. I don't know which one since I only overheard someone else talking about it and when they checked the website that had just a note saying something about returns.

Watched about 10 minutes of Apna  tonite and it looks like an Indian home shopping channel  in "FatoVision"

The Shopping Channel has been broadcasting infomercials only since November.

I guess because, as that saying goes, one man's drink is another man's poison.

There are many shows I personally don't like, but I don't make the assumption that my taste is the slightest bit representative of the wider NZ population.

That said, I do remain concerned that valuable NZ on Air funding goes towards programmes that have high commercial value and appeal, which appears to leave more niche-like shows ( eg Media 7/3) in precarious positions. 'Public broadcasting' on TV in NZ is a joke - thank god for Radio NZ.

I don't claim that my taste is the slightest bit representative of the wider NZ population either. Nor do I begrudge anyone else programming to their taste, even if it's something I have not the slightest interest in, or which I consider has no redeeming value whatsoever. Whatever interests you entertainment wise, go for it. I don't really care.

I only object when someone thinks they have the right to compel (or other people) me to foot the bill for their entertainment preferences. Doubly so when they try and take the high ground and claim I should be obliged to contribute to the entertainment material that they want to watch/hear/read because "it has value". You can make a (weak) case for things like Parliament TV as integral to the functioning of the democracy etc. But as for the essentially commercial entertainment dreck - NZ's Got Talent, the GC, music videos etc - Bah!

It would be interesting of they set up the NZ on Air channel, as a subscription channel containing all the material they fund, with the subscription costing whatever a household is (on average) compelled to chip in to NZ On Air through the tax system. I wonder, if given the choice, how many households would actually opt to pay up in return for access to the material?

Yes, you are compelled to pay for it now, via taxes, whether or not you want/value anything they fund.

My point was that if it was made a subscription channel, so that people had a choice about subscribing and only those who wanted/valued the dreck they sponsor paid, it would be interesting to see who cared enough to actually choose to pay. I was wondering how many would choose tp pay given an actual choice. I suspect the answer would be not many.

Are you on Freeview satellite? It's not on satellite only UHF.
If you are on UHF, have you tried a retune?

I've done a re-scan in Southland but nothing. It's probably only paying for Auckland coverage.

RE: The aspect ratio, has anyone checked to see if they are actually in widescreen and not a 4:3 broadcast using anamorphic?

Considering the guide says it's only trial/testing I wouldn't be surprised if they just plugged it in and worry about the rest during the testing period.
