I've given up on waiting for a MagicTV fix, and bought a Panasonic. Hopefully it is better... Not a good first impression so far, first unit would never display Freeview guide, replaced... I really think Freeview NZ has made a mistake choosing unusual technology so that only a few suppliers can be bothered supporting us properly;(

cb1:
wklie: Those who have regular HDMI issues please try this firmware and see if it makes any difference:

MTV3600TD Firmware 3.23 beta 2

Firmware date: 2015-7-24

http://www.magictv.com/nz/downloads/mtv3600_3_23NZbet2.zip

Other than HDMI handshaking there is no other change.

Have been trying this firmware since returning from hols. About 80% of the time when I turn it on, there is a delay while it does a mini reboot and hence resets my program list sort order. I have had the unit freeze on power up 2 or 3 times - Just displays 'MAGIC TV' and have had to turn it off with the switch on the back to use it. One of the times was only after ~14 hours of being powered on and very little usage. The day before the latest freeze it had been on for over a week. I was recording 2 shows will watching a third and it was very slow to respond to remote commands - got pixelation on 1 of the recordings being made so there is still a memory issue.

Anybody else have comments?

Thanks

My Magic TV 3600 has been having the same problems recently , with pixelation at times and also looping during the program , very frustrating

I've have been running 3.23 beta(original version) for several weeks now and have had similar results to those recently reported by cb1. It became so annoying that I found myself largely avoiding my 3600 and instead pressed my recently acquired Panasonic into service. My 3600 usage fell to recording a single weekly programme. With such reduced usage the problem became more prevalent and nearly every time I woke it from standby to view something it hung on startup and needed a power down/up reset to get it going again. It's such a cot case that if something doesn't improve soon it's off to the dump.
Unfortunately the Panasonic isn't much better to use as its UI is a dog. Even the most commonly required functions (like browsing recordings to select one for viewing) are buried donkey deep in layered menus.
Firmware designers = so logically impaired!

*BUMP*

Having weird problems with my 3600 now, if I don't use it for a few days, when I turn it hangs for ages and has a very low response time, takes at least a minute to respond to a command, and I have new batteries in the remote so it isn't that. The only way to fix it is to do a reboot but it takes a while to get to that part on the menu.

Thinking of buying the new Panasonic recorder instead, the one with built in 1TB storage and without the Blu-ray player. I have simply had no real problem with my other twin tuner Panasonic, it has been very reliable from the beginning, has been unphased by major earthquakes, just continues to do what it's supposed to.

I think you will avoid that problem if you hook it up to a mains power timer, set to switch off the mains once every day.

I set the timer to switch off at 3am and back on a couple of minutes later. Then, in the 3600 settings, have it set to go into standby after a period of time, say 15 minutes.

Have had no problems after setting mine up like that.

Instead of going through the menu to do a reboot, what happens if you power it off using the switch on the back, and then restart? If that fixes the issue, then just set up a timer at the mains power point to power it off and then back on at a suitable time. I do this with mine at 6am every morning. I then have the MagicTV programmed at 6:15am to switch itself back into standby.

I started writing this a couple of hours ago, then got side tracked. Now that I have hit submit, I see theoldfarter has answered with exactly what I said.

Ok, thx for the replies. I hardly use it but when I do, I want it to work, that's all. I suspect it's a memory leak problem.

I reckon you'd be spot on.  My MTV 3600 was fine for quite a while but stopped working completely after some network re-shuffle or other (I'm not clear on the details.  Pixel Magic turned around a new version quickly but that (and every version since) had a memory leak.  The only robust solution I've found is to turn it off and on again with an external power timer at some time when it's not being used (once a week seems fine for me).  Somewhat of a bodge but the chief alternative seems the be an awful-to-use-but-reliable Panasonic HDR.

Are they ever going to fix the memory leak problem? I believe it is a software and not a hardware problem.

I am new to the magic tv 3600 having just purchased one off trademe. Looks almost unused by the recorded content on it. Running 3.12 firmware from 2010

I have read some of this thread but still lack the overall picture of the best firmware to run.

I like the idea of having a forward skip that allows me a sensible time increment - 10 mins like it is now is just dumb. I DO have a mains plug timer that I could devote to regular rebooting.

What firmware should I use, and where can I get hold of it? I briefly tried editing the published URL link to magic tv.com to see if I could get a few choices to download, but failed...

Unfortunately there isn't really any good firmware. Even the latest updates require regular reboots due to freezing up and not recording. Some keen people are willing to setup a timer power switch to do that automatically. Most of us have given up.

I have 3.17, 3.20 & 3.21 if you want them. I think mine is still on 3.16.

Was waiting for new firmware to be released without the memory leak issue, but like @aaronlawrence  just gave up as it wasn't fixed. About 7 months ago the power supply also failed on our unit, so haven't bothered to get a new power supply either.

@TonyS071

Yes, unless you want the Hard Drive spinning all the time, I recommend a Timer that reboots it once a day (mine is 3am).

There has been modified firmware that alows you to jump forward one minute and backwards 8 seconds. there are links in a post on this thread, that leads to it.

I don't know where the link is and if it is still active.

If you are unable to obtain the patched Firmware, I can dig it up (it is somewhere on an external HDD) and put it somewhere for you to download.

@kiwiharry

If you have an external Desktop Hard Drive, the power supply for that should run the Magic.

I have used one on occasions when I have moved the Magic to a temp position in another room.

Hey, @oldfarter...

If you still have access to the patched/hacked firmware, you you please put it a few versions of it somewhere I can download it? The Dropbox links referred to in this thread have expired.

Keen on the sensible skip timers, and I like the idea of a hard disk that doesn't thrash itself. I have a timer ready to restart the whole box.
