wklie: So, for the "reboot right after wake up from standby" symptom, does this occur significantly less in 3.18a, or just the same?  Thanks.

I haven't had any reboots from standby since installing this firmware. However, twice today I've turned it on and the unit has frozen on me and the only way to get it started was to turn it off and on at the wall.

Agreed,  I haven't had a restart yet, but my son said this morning when he turned it on there was no sound, and during playback of a recorded programme the unit froze.

Also had to do the full power off.

The full "reboot right after wake up from standby" with the restart message appears to be lessened, but the "blank screen, wait 15 secs" possibly loss sound and change the view to date/time seems to happen every restart instead of the 1 or 2 times a week of the full reboot. So the 3.18a firmware seems to be a mixed result.

Thanks for feedback.

Here's another beta firmware:

Not recommended for users who are not encountering the "reboot after wake up from standby" issue.

RustyViewer: The title says it. Since I upgraded to 3.18, my Magic TV seems to randomly reboot about once a week. Why is this?

The 'restart almost immediately after powering on' issue has been around for a while (unfortunately!) Doesn't seem to be any updates forthcoming from Magic tv for this.

Actually when this problem was first reported, some 3.19 beta firmwares were made.  However, before the beta process could reach any conclusion, multiple users confirmed that a transmission change fixed their reboot problem:
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=43120&page_no=84

The last 3.19 beta 5 firmware was posted here:
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=62095&page_no=4#921162

Users still have this reboot problem should perform a factory reset, and may also try not standing by the Magic TV, and let it run 7x24.

Hi wklie.
I've got to try something (while my MTV3600 is still in one piece at the top of the stairs ;-).  I have created problems for myself (with other products) by doing things like updating software and factory reset.

Can you advise please: What are the expected results from loading beta software or performing a factory reset?  What is being reset?  What changes am I likely to notice with the product?  I am just a little concerned about any custom setup that I may have made (and probably forgotten about) and any scheduled recordings.

Cheers, Jef.

In my experience with firmware updates to my Magic TV an update has never effected any settings, recordings or scheduled recordings and there have been no changes in the basic operation of the unit.
I would assume a factory reset would, however, delete any settings or recordings. I've never done one though so I'm only assuming this.

Although Magic TV is designed to retain all user settings after firmware upgrade, occasionally people get strange problems after a firmware upgrade that can be cured by a factory reset.  The factory reset simply deletes the user settings and the booking To-Do List (but does not delete the recorded programmes).  Therefore, your custom setup for channel / HDMI / video / operation preferences will be lost, and you will need to re-scan the channels, and re-book all your scheduled recordings as well.

Hi wklie.

Thanks for that.  I'll scroll through the epg and make hand notes of all of my wife's scheduled recordings before I start to change things.

I'm using 3.18.  I have disabled standby and that has stopped the daily re-boot on startup.  The cats love it because the MTV is nice and toasty for them all day. :-(  $$$

I wonder if you can shed any light on the variety of 3.19 I have found on the NZ download server.  I can't find release notes for any of these (mtv3600_3_19NZb3, mtv3600_3_19NZb4, mtv3600_3_19NZb5 and mtv3600_3_19NZb6).

Cheers, Jef.

So far I've had no issues with the latest firmware. The MagicTV seems to be behaving itself so far. Fingers crossed!!!

Simply bring up the To-Do List to see all the bookings of scheduled recordings, you may not need to scroll through the EPG.

3.19 beta 5 and before are obsolete.

3.19 beta 6 was made specifically for users in Nelson area who experience EPG booking issues, and is not recommended for other users.

3.18 a / b were made for the "reboot after wake up from standby" problem discussed in this thread, and is not recommended for other users.

Unfortunately not for me. :-(

Kids just woke it from standby, got a brief picture which was immediately followed by around five seconds of black screen.

After that, back to TV2, but with no sound.

Changing channel up then down restored the sound.

More work required.
