RingoTB: It will be trial and error them to see what actually happens. Both statements may be correct as the section I was looking at was to do with an external USB drive.

I think you are both right. I tried to play a file exported to a USB drive from my fathers unit. It would not play locally, some dialog to the effect: not recorded on this device. When playing by sharing over a lan, I bet it is sharing the keys to decrypt as well. This could either be by files shared using NFS or by network packets. The mtv executable occasionally outputs debug information on broadcast network packets.

This is the output from the mtv executable when I tried playing the file, see also the sending 44 bytes to 255.255.255.255 it's almost broadcasting debug information. I think the code1 and code2 are to do with the mismatch of keys:

Read open("/mnt/ext/(32G)Extreme2/ts/150220202500_003_All New The Graham Norton Show.ts")
Read open("/mnt/ext/(32G)Extreme2/ts/150220202500_003_All New The Graham Norton Show.001.ts")

I think the way to handle this in the long run, is to fool the firmware into thinking all broadcasts are SD so they are recorded without encryption.

Hi Ian.  Are both of your 3700s running 6.01NZ software?

http://www.dishtv.co.nz/news/magictv-share-feature-with-601nz-firmware-update.htm

The latest MagicTV firmware 6.01NZ has added the MagicTV Share feature to the MTV3700. This feature adds support for LAN Network sharing with multiple MTV3700 units on the same network.

After updating with the latest 6.01NZ firmware you can find this new feature located in Magic TV Gadgets -> Network HDD.

The MagicTV Share allows you to play recordings on your bedroom MagicTV that have been recorded on your lounge MagicTV. Just settle back in bed and look through your whole collection of recorded programs.

Simply choose Network HDD Server on your lounge MagicTV and it will be ready to share it's recordings with any other MagicTV on your network.

Now when you choose Network HDD on your bedroom MagicTV you can play recorded programmes from your lounge MagicTV.

Now if we could just come up with an add-on that would access the MagicTV on a raspberry Pi running XBMC we'd have something really useful. Maybe a project for the winter months...

I guess the NFS server access is read-only?

There could be some value to adding an FTP server as a simple alternative for file management purposes. Windows and Linux allow FTP hosts to be "mounted" like a local directory. You could upload m2ts or ts files onto the HDD's /video/ directory and playback in the MagicTV Camcorder "Gadget".
