I don't mind TVNZ getting the Wimbledon rights, but I think the pop-up Freeview Channel 15 should also be available to SKY subscribers as discussed in this thread:

I suspect there's something in the contract that TVNZ has struck with Wimbledon that prevents them from offering the pop-up channel on a pay tv service. Or it could be that Sky simply wasn't willing to pay TVNZ for it.

Speaking of which, TVNZ has paid for the exclusive rights to Wimbledon. Why let Sky customers watch it? It's competition- that's what you get in a commercial market. If people want to be able to view it, they should get the equipment to enable that (just like how you have to do the same if you want to watch exclusive Sky content) instead of expecting to have some kind of entitlement to have things handed to them on a plate.

What's the point of getting rid of the + 1 channels if they're not going to be replaced with something better?

I would be happy if they didn't replace them with anything, and just used the bandwidth saved to up the bitrate and transmission quality on the primary channels.

This has nothing to do with Wimbledon.  It is pure conjecture that this bandwidth would even be magically used for anyone's pet peeves if it were "saved".

I'm sure all the people who benefit from the +1 channels and don't care about the quality, appreciate the sacrifice you're willing to make ;-p

Sorry to disappoint you then. I'm not making any sacrifice. I'm on terrestrial not satellite (mostly, I also have a seldom used FV satellite capability), and have no interest whatsoever in tennis.

I do, however, have an elderly relative who is on satellite and greatly into tennis. It's quite a painful process. I have explained it carefully about four times now. However, I don't think they yet understand why their friends can get the tennis and they can't, and that it's not something I can pop around and fix for them. They seem to be getting quite distressed about it and calling me to plead for me to fix it.

Why can't they get tennis on satellite?

Swype on iOS is detrimental to accurate typing. Apologies in advance.

The popup channel repeats all day.  The satellite doesn't have the popup channel.  Therefore what the person you responded said follows.

So if TVNZ gets exclusive rights to tennis, thats competition, and ok? Yep, I agree. So if Sky gets exclusive rights to tennis, thats also ok, competition. Or is that not ok if Sky has it?

What's the point?

TVNZ is owned by us all, and by getting the coverage benefits the subset of us all that enjoy it.  In theory they should have to provide access to all.  Sky is a company where you need to pay to access it.  And in order to access the sky coverage, you need to pay for bundled junk, that they can make you pay for because their coverage of the event tends to be exclusionary.

Apples and oranges.

No. The issue is its ok for TVNZ to get exclusive rights but not Sky. Can't have it both ways. Clearly an anti Sky bias afoot. Bundled junk? So every channel on FTA is awesome, but not on Sky? Like everything in life, some people like this, some like that, so again, its just bias.

I think you're having comprehension difficulties. I'm saying it's fine for either TVNZ or Sky to compete. What you quoted is nothing at all like what you're claiming I said.
