I've stopped using the T2200 and bought the Panasonic. So far I find it vastly more stable. I got sick and tired of the T2200 constantly breaking up the screen (the Panasonic and other previous devices like my Magic TV never did this and were perfectly fine, only the T2200 had a problem) and the fast forward and rewind always managing to get the sound and image out of sync. It's just crap hardware, don't even bother with it.

Your post gave me serious FOMO! I hate the thought of missing out on something better so I've done some investigating and read a lot of reviews on the Panasonic you mention. I liked the idea of the Netflix app and a playing from recorded content app, but I've come across several problems that would be a deal breaker for me. Are you able to confirm these previously mentioned issues with the Panasonic please?

Terrible remote control button placement
No volume on remote control
5 second delay often when issuing a comand, but no acknowledgement of command received, leaving user wondering if it received the request
Only padding available per episode (ie 1 min before, 5 mins after recording), not per series, so you have to pad for every single recording to make sure you dont miss the end.
When padding results in an overlap the padding occurs but does not record the 2nd show, ie cancels recording
A black screen regulary when Freeview +1 is enabled
Access via app for only 1 device at a time

I'm thinking it might be best to move the discussion regarding the Panasonic device to a new post rather than using the T2200 Discussion post as its now veering OT?

The remote control isn't bad, but the lack of a mute button is annoying. I started using a Harmony remote because the DishTV remote was so bad, so I've just programmed that. It's fine.

The remote does have a volume control, just not a mute button.

Remote commands can be a little laggy, mainly with the internet apps rather than the main TV stuff where I find it to be fine. I find the FFWD and RWD substantially more reliable than the DishTV box.

Padding, I set this on the machine as a whole, and haven't had an issue. I can see why you'd set it per episode if you had a particular cross over, but I've never needed to, nor have I tried to do it for a series.

Haven't had the black screen on +1 channels

Access via App for 1 device at a time, that maybe the case, there's only my wife and myself and she doesn't use other devices, I've never tried, but you could look up the Media Centre App and see what it says.

Fair call, however to anyone who read the previous post saying its better, then its only fair for them to know it quite possibly is far from it. Two sides to every coin etc

Agreed.

Apologies - wasn't meant to feel like the comment was directed towards you personally, just the discussion in general :)

@Taniachch

Thank you for pitching in Tania, I was almost believing this was what I really wanted.

All thanks to you for putting in the shortcomings.

I believe we have some control over things locally; but not when it comes to Panasonic.

Cheers

Bernard

(I can't use quote tags - what's with that ?!?)

I think I missed the boat on this, but yes, it was all fantastic comparison content for the thread "Best off-the shelf TIVO replacement" at https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=114&topicid=218066

I don't own either, just a terminal Tivo, but I'm not keen on instability or lack of control, so I think I'll probably try converting a shelved laptop into a HTPC. A couple of USB tuners for ~$30 and some time, and I'll see. Oh, there is just the issue of the onboard graphics being fried, so I need to find an alternative graphics card via Mini PCI Express, ExpressCard or USB. Good geeky fun.

On that note, the following threads were useful:

HTPC Replacement for ~$300:  https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=114&topicid=208847&page_no=38#1753376

We purchased our Aerial Box T2200 this year and have been learning to use it. We are noticing issues with recording and playback, in that the box is recording what we set it to record, but when we playback we often have interrupted sound, picture disturbances and persistent constant skipping, which is frustrating. Also one of the channels never plays correctly, (Firstlight), it plays the audio continuously but the pictures stall and skip.

Do you have any suggestions for us.

Thanks Wendy

Hi Wendy

It sounds like a reception related issue but we can check a few things and help diagnose if you called us while in front of the unit either 0800 347 488 from a landline or 07 929 4123 from a cell phone.

So, turned on the DishTV tonight to be greeted by a dialog box saying "Unknown file format drive, Do you want to format?"

Not really wishing to reformat and lose all my recordings, anyone else seen this before, and any suggestions as to how to recover the systems without reformating?  I've tried power-cycling but no luck.  Haven't tried factoiry reset yet for fear of losing the recordings, but any suggestions welcome as it appears to be royally stuffed at the moment :(

factory resetting shouldn't delete programming.

Took it apart, put it back together again, nothing.  Factory reset, nothing (although factory reset does blow away your list of scheduled recordings). Reformatted the drive and at least the drive is working again, although obviously all recorded content is gone.

Seems like DishTV lost the format information as the drive appears to be OK.  Not impressed if that's a firmware issue rather than a drive issue.

Less than a month ago i posted this:

"have owned the unit 1 week, its 'clunky' and straight away artifacts and juddering, found to be the quality of the signal was dropping from 98% to about 60% being unstable (never have any issues with the Magic TV box it replaced) Bought a band filter to sort this issue then a few days later over 10 channels vanished from the EPG and if for example the channel 3 button was pressed there would be a 'invalid entry' message, tuner 1 wasn't working but tuner 2 was ........ rebooted system, same issue. Messaged dishtv yesterday but no reply as yet so phoned and was told to reboot then if that doesn't work rescan all channels or factory reset as this happens sometimes?? this is a brand new unit customers shouldn't be having to fault find and fix known issues - unsure of the quality of the hardware inside but 512mb of Ram indicates its built on a very tight budget even though the price indicates otherwise"

Now the remote light is constantly flashing and when pressed simply brings up an invalid message - this T2200 unit is unbelievably bad if they are all like mine or have i just got a lemon? no doubt this is another known issue that dish tv know about? please enlighten me before i have to admit to my wife her years old Tivo box is far superior even though they are canning it!

Any ideas how to fix this - the batteries are fine
