Great news - ticks two of my boxes. Just got to find one at a nice price now :)

Well I might be able to sell you ours!

The Freeview guy came and said "Oh you're double story? Oh and there's too many trees, you won't get a signal"

I don't really believe him, everyone else on the street has a UHF Antenna up and pointing at Mt Erin, I can't see why we can't have one too. I've asked another mob to come and give their opinion.

But if it really doesn't work out, well, unless Harvey Norman will take this back, I will be selling it brand new!

As someone who has trees between me and the local tower, it could be true. Our signal can get a bit dodgy if there's lots of rain in the leaves etc, probably getting to a better time of the year with most of the leaves gone etc.

Possibly he is not willing or able to go up on your second story roof to facilitate best antenna placement? Hopefully the next guy will be able to give you better options.

P.S. It's nitpicking, but if you sell this, given that you've used it already, even if just for testing, it won't be "brand new", will it? More like "as new" or "like new" I'd have thought.

Yea we're in HB.

All our neighbours have FV antennas up.  I get the TV Antenna guy's point, we do have a mini forest of trees right in front of our property.   But I think anyone with a big enough ladder will be able to whack up an antenna with enough gain that'll mitigate that.

I think it was just a "too hard" job for the guy.  But he reckoned anyone else would say the same.  Still, I have another bunch coming to look at it for me.

I hate you.

Totally agree. I wouldn't sell it brand new, only "as new". It's been opened and used. It ain't new anymore.

Hi there , I have to say your right Mspec The guide is very fast, for me unfortunately I thought this was the fastest thing in the box coming from using a HTPC (Home Theater Pc) (So loading YouTube or anything takes for ever) So for me I'm staying with my HTPC for now.

As for my mother after having the DMR_HWT260 at home for the night we purchasing the DMR-PWT560GN its almost the same just has a 500Gb Hard drive and adds a Blu-ray recording.

Heres some of the bad and good:

Timer recording: Works very well and is easy to set with the Guide Link function which has an added 3mins befor the show and 5 mins after (you can edit this to allow for back to back shows ie. Overlapping) under "Settings for Recording" you can find the settings for Timer Record Start Buffer and Timer Record stop Buffer if you need to change them for ever use

Overlapping: You can not overlapping more than Once, You can eliminate the overlapping if its back to back by changing the end time of the 1st and the start of the 2nd recording to the same time (losing 1sec of video from what I seen) or you get the opinion of changing it with a repeat event of the duplicated programme which is nice  ie. plus 1 changes but of course then you only get stereo sound not Dolby               Note: If a timer recording reaches its start time when all tuners are being used for recording, the recording of one of the programmes terminates.

REWIND LIVE TV/PAUSE LIVE TV: Will pause when the unit has started recording using both tuners and of course when switching to other channels.

Manual skip: -10s: Skip backward +60s: Skip forward keys do not work here in New Zealand :(

signal strength: Just as a not it does need a bit more than for most tvs.

TV Anytime: Its cool,  live Tv or recorded and you can set a timed recording ,but have not been able to find a way to do this from a Guide Link as the only one available is a link to the freeview sites guide (not cool) and the app is almost all text based and slow but it works (have had the box reboot twice when playing with this)

As a note I do own a lot of Panasonic gear so I must like it LOL would say as far as my next Tv I think it would have to be a Sony Android TV as they look and run nice with lots of bells and whistles that I would use unlike half the apps and software on my Pansonic....The biggest thing wrong with Panasonic as a whole would have to be there software and CPU they are so dated in looks, and I would have to think the CPU is to slow for the job as its like using a $100 smartphone (apart from it works every time) where it can only do one thing at a time (on these I think it's sometimes able to do 3 things ie Rec 2 tv shows and which a dvd or live tv or Internet tv) with the TV Anytime it's down to two I think :(

For what's out there these would have to be one of best for now only been beaten by the Mysky plus box or a Good HTPC

Maybe hire a scissor lift to make it easier for the person. You don't even state if it easy access with a ladder. Typically if houses don't have antennas because its a difficult job.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Yes, I suspect this is what I'll have to do.  I'm even happy to get the trees cleared, the previous owners planted them but they're all actually on council land, not mine.  I'll be super shocked if I really can't get reception here, I think it's just a hard job that might require a bit more planning and some safety gear.

I'll let everyone know the outcome. Will be sad if we have to go Satellite, I want HD damnnit.

So other than BR Recording, is it a good Blu-Ray PLAYER? My FIL's Playstation 3 and Playstation TV are playing up he wants a box to replace it. Needs to Record FTA TV Incl Freeview in HD.

It mentions streaming, does this mean from the APP you can play media stored (and recorded) on this device, remotely on another device? If so, I think we are getting one!

To be clear, the  Panasonic DMR-HWT260 being discussed is NOT a Blu Ray player.

There's a very similar looking model (DMR-PWT560) that only has 500Gb storage instead of the 1Tb AND a Blu Ray player.

EDIT: Just realised you're asking @hytek, sorry.

Thanks, having said that, how can a recorder not be a player, otherwise it couldn't play the recorded content? I am surprised people still store data on optical media?

I don't understand the question?

The Panasonic boxes record Freeview to their internal hard drive.

There's a box with a Blu Ray drive option too, I'm not sure if it's only a player or if it can also record.

We just bought the box with the 1Tb hard disk to record Freeview too, we have no need to play/record Blurray.

Does that answer the question?

The thread is about a unit which has a Blu-ray recorder, I am simply asking if it can PLAY Blu-Ray (Such as I would buy or rent) as well as RECORD Blu-ray.

It's about the non-blu-ray version.
But I'd be surprised if the other version @hytek mentioned can't play them back.

Hi there Sorry if I caused some confusion Here is a link for anyone wanting to know about the  New Panasonic Recorders the one people are disgusting here is the

DMR-HWT260GN

Smart Network HDD Recorder with Twin HD Tuner DMR-HWT260GN

1TB hard drive, 684hrs of HD recording

DMR-HWT260GN-300 x 162 pxl

As you see it uses a Hard Drive to record to, and has No Blu-Ray or DVD or Cd driver so Playback is from the Hard Drive or Internet.

So networkn you would need something like the DMR-PWT560GN. thats a Smart Network 3D Blu-ray Disc™/DVD Player and HDD Recorder.

Hope that helps.

There's a DMR-PWT760 coming out (if it's not already available) which plays Blu-Ray discs and has a 1TB HDD. It's the replacement for the 840GZ, which I have.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for any decent apps to be added to the Panasonic app store. They haven't even made Netflix available on the 840GZ (the top-of-the-line model until about a month ago). In my opinion, the best setup is the PVR plus some kind of device that is a dedicated streamer, such as an AppleTV, Chromecast or Roku, that will be kept up to date by the app providers. I use PVR/AppleTV and it covers me for everything except TVNZ OnDemand (no freeview plus on my PVR), either via app or airplay.
