I finally got round to networking my Panasonic DMR-BW850 with a network cable. The manual said that with Viera Cast I would get YouTube and Picasso at least.

All I can get is the weather, no option for anything else. It won't even let me set up an account. I checked the network settings and they were perfect, it had found it no problem.

It is a 2009 model. Anything I can do to get the services working I had understood I was supposed to get or has that model been abandoned for Viera Cast?

Personally I think Smart TV have poor support. Apps Support usually stops only after 2 years or so where as a TV can last much longer.

I would suggest getting Chromecast (cheaper) or Apple TV (more expensive) for the "smart" function. They both have much better support and offer far more flexibility than the in built TV apps.

My Panasonic HWT260 app interface is so vulgar I've never used it. A nice new Samsung TV by comparison is beautiful with an ATV4 and Chromecast as backup.

Was this one of the devices that lost youtube when google killed off the old API like all the old sony TVs did?

Looks like it. Would there be any way to update to the new API with a software/firmware update?
