RustyGonad: http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/07/08/are-there-two-vista-media-center-updates-due-this-year/

Another rumor for the pot - looks like its been split into two releases, one this month (multi tuner etc), one later in the year (h.264)...

Looking at the state of the first beta this would make perfect sense, as the majority of the unstability is around h.264...

But then again - just like the next guy I'm only guessing...

Based on the information in that posting I'd be happy right now.  It would bring proper DVB-S support and make me feel more comfortable in abandoning my ultra stable MCE2005 and heading over into Vista MCE world where i'm really looking forward to browsing photos by tags Smile

(While i did have DVB-S hacked and working in vista mce I never felt comfortable enough to abandon mce2005)

EngadgetHD: So while it doesn't appear that the update will have any ground breaking new features, we have to say that all-in-all we're pretty excited to get our hands on the new features.

I would have considered DVB-S, hetereogenous tuners, EIT Guide, MHEG and Teletext "groundbreaking" in the MCE world..... at least for those of outside the USA

Why not wait for the stable final release at the end of this month?  Yes, it is going to be released by the end of this month.  Yes, it is...

Well it looks like Fiji WAS released on 16 July, but only as OEM. (I'm not really sure what that means though in terms of how to get hold of it.  I do know what the letters stand for...).

Check out the following links for more discussion on the Fiji release:

Does this mean we have to buy a brand new copy of Vista to get the improvements??

Note to MS.
Please refund me the cost difference between Vista Home and Home Premium as the only reason to have premium is for your useless and virtually unusable (in NZ) Media Centre.  Let ME decide if I am capable of installing an SP to make it operational.

It is an OEM upgrade only and will not be made available as a download for end users.

There is very little new it anyway that would be of significance for users in NZ - looks like we'll be waiting for Windows 7  to see MS offer a working Media Center solution with H.264 support which really is a joke. Guys like sub can write GB-PVR by himself and yet an organisation like Microsoft can't get a working solution out the door..

As i hinted earlier in this thread, i learned this from someone who is in on microsoft stuff a while ago. Sorry i didn't say it outright, but he said it was kinda confidential.

I have asked for confirmation from someone in Redmond - but I wouldn't keep the hope too high.

Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Home Premium users should all ask for partial refund if this update is not applicable. And certainly New Zealand users should ask for an even bigger refund since the whole software package is pretty much useless unless you don't want to watch HD TV broadcast in this country.

Except for dual tuner support which will allow me to have Sky and Freeview SD working together!  That's one of the biggest things I am after since I could not get the dual tuner hack to work!

Microsoft can suck my big fat....empty wallet.

I hate to say that there is probably fat chance of any of this being confirmed anytime soon.  I hate to be negative but...

I've been waiting so god damn long for dual tuner support.  The OEM status cannot be long term.  Surely!

This article does not apply to the earlier version of Windows Media Center that is included in Windows Vista or in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).

The Windows Media Center TV Pack was released on July 16, 2008. Not all computers that are shipped by hardware vendors in the retail channel have the Windows Media Center TV Pack installed. To check whether your computer has the Windows Media Center TV Pack installed, follow these steps:
1.Start Windows Media Center.
2.In the Start window, scroll to Tasks, click Settings, and then click General.
3.Click About Windows Media Center, and then click Software Version.
If the version is 6.1.1000.18273, you are running the Windows Media Center TV Pack.

If the version number is 6.0.6001.18000, you are not running the Windows Media Center TV Pack. You are running the version of Windows Media Center that is included in Windows Vista or in Windows Vista SP1.
